Chapter 03: RIP, LOVE
First of all I am extremely sorry, I am just feeing like I am committing a crime. Actually the ending of this chapter was the middle of the actual chapter 03 I plotted out, but the part felt so good that I ended up dividing the chapter into two chapters which ended up delaying Aryan's entry a little. Though I really hope all of you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed imagining it and penning it down

RIP, LOVE
As time flew by, the date of the examination came and Chavi did manage to convince her parents saying that she would go shopping in the city with her friend’s mother while her friend would sit for the exam. As she didn’t go with any documents they didn’t suspect anything. Imlie met Chavi at the bus station where Chavi’s parents wished her good luck for the exams and told Chavi about the list of souvenirs they need from the city. Chavi wouldn’t have been able to convince them if it would have been the town near to the village as her father goes there for business almost everyday, but the city was somewhere they would visit very occasionally only twice or thrice in the whole year. Satyakaam was busy hence according to the plan Meethi accompanied both the girls.
Chavi felt a sense of victory when she sat on the bus and it left for the city.
Meethi asked Chavi, “Chavi what is the list for shopping?”
“What shopping?” Chavi replied in reflex.
“Aren't you going shopping?” Meethi asked again.
Chavi was about to say no as an answer when Imlie pinched her hard. She looked at Imlie confused.
Imlie had noticed three more people from their village traveling in the same bus. She even didn’t mention Chavi’s plan to Meethi as she knew her mother can hardly keep secrets. Her mother might be a good willed person but not with a strong will. She gave Chavi a signal with her eyes that some ears are still on them.
Chavi picked the hint immediately and replied, “Shopping is for my mom I am going to eat in the huge restaurants and enjoy city view”
Meethi smiled believing everything.
The real shock came to Meethi in front of the examination center. When they reached the entrance Imlie opened her file and gave Chavi’s admit card to her along with a pen.
“Imlie, why are you giving these to Chavi?” asked Meethi, utterly confused.
“Because this is her examination center. My center is on the left lane” Imlie replied while handing Chavi her things and a water bottle.
“All the Best” Imlie wished.
“Thank you,” Chavi said.
“Now run” Imlie instructed.
Meethi looked baffled, she never knew about such plans. As Chavi went inside after hearing Imlie’s instruction, Imlie looked at Meethi and said, “Amma within half an hour my exam will also start. I am going to tell you everything while we run towards my center but before that make a promise in my name you will never speak out about what you saw or hear today. I don’t have much time, just keep it in your mind I am doing everything for Chavi’s sake.”
Meethi has never seen such an intimidating look in her daughter’s eyes which somehow scared her a little too and she ended up promising not to speak anything about today. Imlie shared how they planned for giving the entrance exams as Chavi wants to study further while almost running towards Imlie’s examination center.
“But Gudia, even if she passes, how will she get out of the village? She has to get married in two months” Meethi exclaimed.
Imlie and Meethi have already reached the entrance of the examination center. The timing of the exams were also in their favor. Chavi’s exam started at 9:00 am and Imlie’s was about to start at 9:30 am.
“Amma, she will get out of our village in the next two weeks. Right now wish me luck and pick her at 12:00 pm and come here. I will be out at 12:30 pm and then we can buy souvenirs and eat our lunch in some good place” replied Imlie.
Meethi felt like she just didn't know this girl for a moment, the command in Imlie’s voice gave shivers down her spine. She felt like she was talking to some strong powerful person who can ruin or make the lives of others with just a sentence. ‘What will happen in two weeks?’ is the only thing she could wonder.
Imlie went inside before she could ask anything extra hence she could only say, “All the best”.
After the exam both the girls had a good time and returned back to Pagdandia. Now it was time to leave things in the hands of time as they successfully managed to do their jobs without bringing any eyes of suspicion on them.
The next week Imlie spent her time working her random jobs and managed to save up to 31,000 rupees in her account on her own. The days came and went in the blink of an eye and the estimated day for Aditya’s arrival came which would be tomorrow.
The night before the day of Aditya’s arrival, there was quite chaos and gossip in Imlie’s home. Imlie had plans fixed for tomorrow already, but her grandmother had some gossip to chat on. Every occasion of life her grandmother was bent on making sarcastic comments on the mother-daughter duo.
“Meethi tohar ko pata hai kal gao ma kon aa raha hai?(Meethi do you know who is coming to our village tomorrow?)”
Meethi had predicted that this would be aimed at her so she kept mum instead of replying.
“Sehri Babu( City Man)”, as Meethi’s step-mother continued to mock her Imlie decided to not intervene much. She knew well her mother can answer and reveal their own plans but since she was quiet she might not feel the necessity to answer.
“Nineteen years back you played with a city man, now history is going to repeat itself. You have an illegitimate youthful daughter to carry on your legacies.”
Wow I really forgot how nasty my grandmother could get after receiving her immense love in my past life thought Imlie. The sweet image she had of her grandmother of her past life was getting washed off with the dirty sarcasm mixed remarks of her current grandmother’s. She couldn’t feel more upset than this, for her Aryan’s absence was a big deal but digesting her grandmother’s horrible behavior was getting more unbearable. She wanted to change her grandmother back to the sweet one but yet doesn’t know how to make it possible.
“Nakli Naani I am already in love” said Imlie with a soft voice.
“Oh that Aryan Singh Rathore?”
“Yep”
“So is he coming tomorrow?”
“Nope, this one is Aditya Kumar Tripathi. A guy of thirty three with high morals and a sweet personality that would make anyone sick if they get too close to him”, said Imlie lost in thought.
“Hai re Sita Maiyya…Look Meethi your girl already knows so much. Oo ka kundli dekhke aayi kaa Imaliya?(Imlie had you seen his kundli?) that you know so much about him” Imlie’s grandmother retorted.
“What kundli? I just heard that in Sabji Mandi( Vegetable market) in the morning. That guy has too many awards in the field of journalism. A pretty successful person at the age of thirty three but do lack in decision making skills”
“Imlie you talk as if you know him”, Meethi questioned her this time.
Know Him? I know him better than anyone else thought Imlie.
“Nope, since I have plans to study in journalism next, hence I have heard about him a little. Pretty Amazing of a feat he did achieve. And nakli naani I don’t have time to play with him. I am going to Chautaalgarh tomorrow to check my results and leaving Pagdandia by Tuesday for Delhi to take my admission. So this time you play around with that Sehri Babu(City Man)”
“What kind of language is this? Is this the kind of behavior you have taught to your daughter Meethi?”
“Mark my words Nakli Naani…One day both my Amma and I will be precious to you. Till then good night. We got to catch a bus tomorrow morning”
The night passed and the time for dawn came, Imlie woke up and looked at the picture of Sita Maiyya. Both her mom and grandmother were still sleeping.
“Sita Maiyya, today is the beginning of the chess game I am going to play. Please be on my side though I would not do anything good. I at least need you on my side to change my fate. I can’t control others feelings, I can only control mine but what about lives? Anyways the game begins. All the best to myself.”
Imlie and Meethi reached the bus station. They were about to catch the 7:30 am bus but for some delay they had to catch the 8:00 am bus. Imlie wanted to avoid this because the bus which leaves to Chautaalgarh is the same bus which arrives from Delhi. And she could only feel discomfort as she could remember this was the bus on which Aditya came.
The Bus arrived in Pagdandia at 7:45 am.The moment she saw Aditya getting down from the bus, she felt like running and to just hug him tight. This unsettling feeling of sudden emotions came from meeting an old friend who doesn’t remember her anymore according to her but she remembered a few fragments of her past which she couldn’t remember before.
It was a night of celebration, Aditya won the journalist of the year among all the media houses. The party was thrown in a bar on the insistence of his colleagues and Imlie had already been a sensational name in the journalism industry, she was invited too. Aryan was out on a trip leaving only her to attend alone. When she joined the party, congratulated him and sat on a stool near the bar’s counter table with a glass of Champagne, Aditya greeted her sarcastically, “Hunter Singh Rathore didn’t come with you? Did he get over his honeymoon phase so fast within five years?”
“Your intensity of sarcasm has came down a lot, Mr. Tripathi. Please have a seat” Imlie replied with a smile as he took the stool near her.
“When did you start to drink?”
“When I felt like my tolerance to alcohol got a little better. Aryan is out for a business trip hence couldn’t join to celebrate your achievement”
“No more grudge left from his side?”
“Perhaps. But don’t you think it’s high time for you to sort your life too?”
“You are talking about Malini?”
“Nope, I am talking about the kid who didn’t see his parent’s divorcing but still never saw his father. You should make haste in sorting out your life else that life would be in chaos Aditya”
“Aditya? You called my actual name after ages… else you always just greet me with Mr.Tripathi. Aditya Babu has long left the track but it felt good hearing Aditya from your mouth”
“Time heals, I suppose. Also my dignity won’t allow me to call you ‘Aditya babu’ anymore. So I would like a new relationship with you. How about a platonic friendship? It’s not like we can avoid each other being in the same field also the same family and I can clearly feel you don’t love me anymore”
“Friendship sounds good indeed. Also you are right I overcame that phase, we were never meant to be together but I did have a role to bring you to your real destiny. Though the path was tough for both of us. I heard from maa you met my kid? How is he and when did you get in contact with Malini?”
“I am in contact with her from last two years”
“Are you kidding me?”
“Nope and I can guarantee you will feel really happy to meet her. It’s just that you need to find her as she left Delhi long back”
“I don’t want to, to be honest”
“Your choice. You were always a bad decision maker hence as a true well wisher and now your friend I do advise you to look around. You did a great job by going to tough places for interviews and coverage but now you should focus on your personal life too. Goodnight my friend”
As the fragment of memory riled up on the surface Imlie got confused with the equation between her, Malini and Aditya. She never put enough efforts to gear up these memories, if she remembered it was only the good moments with Aryan and her. Also the bad memories of the one year of her marriage with Aditya.
She saw Aditya walking towards the village head who came to greet him. Luckily he didn’t see her and got busy with the crowd. She and Meethi sat in the bus for their journey to Chautaalgarh.
“So this is the Sehri Babu(City Man) Amma was talking about?” Meethi exclaimed.
“Yes”
“I hope he takes a good interview of your Dadda”
“He will Amma”
“How are you so sure? Your Dadda hates city people, his luck had supported him enough that your Dadda said yes to his interview”
“Don’t worry Amma, Dadda will like him. Now let’s focus on the work we have to do,” said Imlie and put her eyes on the windshield of the bus as the driver put on the ignition keys.
“Gudia the Sehri Babu is looking at us” Meethi exclaimed as the bus started.
Imlie looked outside the window and found him looking in her direction. Imlie’s and Aditya’s eyes met and she could feel his stare as if he knew her already. He tried to get rid of the crowd who came to meet him and walk towards the bus which just started at a slow speed.
An unknown fear grasped Imlie. She thought what if he climbs the bus and stops her from going? What if he ruins the plan to go to Chautaalgarh? Does he also remember his past life? Will he ruin all her plans? Her fear only got away when the bus had its wheels on the highway road. She looked through the windows and saw him stopped by the village people. She felt relieved after the stress passed away.
Imlie looked up for her marks and found she and Chavi both secured good ranks in the entrance exams. Both managed to be eligible for their admission in their respective colleges and she also found the date and admit card of her Scholarship exam which would take place next Friday. She felt relieved as she would be able to return back to Pagdandia on Saturday as she planned before.
The mother daughter duo returned back to Pagdandia by afternoon. As they were about to go to their house Raghu a classmate of Imlie informed she was called by Geeta ma’am; their class teacher.
“Amma, I will come for lunch at 2:30 pm. Now it’s only one o’ clock so see you later. Jay Sita Maiyya”, Imlie left for school after saying this to Meethi.
As Imlie reached her classroom she saw Geeta Trivedi her English ma’am was waiting for her.
“Ma’am you called for me?” Imlie enquired.
“Oh Imlie please come in. I called you because I wanted to recommend you as a volunteer”
“Volunteer for what?”
“You know a Journalist came to our village today.”
“I saw him in the morning at the bus station”
“The Sarpanch asked for a bright student to be his guide during his stay here. I was thinking of recommending you”
“I am sorry ma’am but it wouldn’t be possible for me to take up this task”
“Any particular reason?”
“ I have passed my entrance exam and I will be leaving for college admission tomorrow. So the next possibility of me being in this village is about next Saturday during the weekend” replied Imlie.
“Oh my! Congratulations dear and I am sorry for trying to burden you with this. I will find someone else.”
“Thank you ma’am but I guess you would like to pass this opportunity to Suraj. Could you please give this opportunity to a really deserving candidate who is getting ignored a little because of having no future?” Imlie replied.
Geeta looked up and met Imlie’s eyes and she could feel her pity for someone whom the school was almost ignoring for not wanting to be in a mess.
“But that…”
“It might be a mess in the eyes of the school but for that person it would be a golden opportunity. I assure you”
“Okay I will do something about it”
“Thank you ma’am”
As Imlie left the classroom and was on the path to the gate she bumped into Chavi. Chavi’s eyes sparkled with the question of whether she passed the exam, after all the morning trip of Imlie to Chautaalgarh was to check their results. Imlie nodded her head as a ‘yes’ to her question and she giggled in happiness as if she could see a ray of hope. Now Chavi’s attention got grabbed in the conversations of the kids in the background, the talk of the village from kids to the older generation was only one thing, ‘The Journalist from City’.
Chavi exclaimed hearing them, “Imlie a journalist came to our village”
“Yes”
“As you predicted”
“Nope I heard from Dadda’s team people”
“Oh! But what if he…” as Chavi was proceeding with her line Imlie interrupted.
“We have nothing to do with what he thinks. Just focus on whatever I said to you”
“Okay, then I am leaving I have some works pending which if I don’t do I will not get the marksheet”
“Hmm, all the best and you are coming tonight right?”
“Evening?”
“Indeed”
“Yes, I will come and help you in packing your bags”
Imlie smiled and said goodbye to her friend. She walked through the lanes and she reached the center square; she saw people were standing surrounding the Banyan Tree which stands tall at the center of the village. A puppet show was taking place and the crowd was enjoying it. As she tried to make her place to watch the show she bumped into a tall man who immediately looked down at her and exclaimed, “Imlie…”
The voice almost freezed her but she immediately got her composure back and stood straight. It was none other than Aditya standing in front of her.
“Ooo app to sehri babu hai naa? Aapko hamar naam kaisan pata?(Oh Aren’t you the guy from the city? How do you know my name?)”
Aditya was taken aback for a second. He had almost forgotten that the girl who stood in front of him still didn't know him, he thought she would remember him when she saw him from the bus. Her gaze was like she knew him from beforehand but now he felt clueless.
“I heard from Dadda”
Now Imlie started to shake from inside. This man knows about the past.
“Dadda? Why are you calling him Dadda?”
“I mean Satyakaam ji. Aren't you his daughter?”
“I am but I doubt you came in contact with him yet. He isn’t some normal person who will meet as a coincidence in the market so I doubt he told you about me” Imlie said a little sternly.
She wanted to give the impression that she isn’t comfortable chatting with a stranger in the middle of the road.
“Oh I am sorry I heard from villagers about you”, Aditya tried to rectify his mistakes.
“Imlie you already met the Sehri Babu?” asked a villager.
“Nope, I just met him right now. By the way, it's time for lunch. I am leaving. Jay Sita Maiyya ki.”
Imlie ran as fast as she could without looking behind. She was scared that he may catch her and understand she was hiding that even she knew the past.
But to her dismay a supporter of Satyakaam brought him to their house in the evening while giving him some detailed tour of the village. He got thirsty near her house was the lame excuse he gave. Imlie felt irked to death, she might have liked him as a friend in her past life but at this moment she would do anything to not be in contact with him, at least alone.
She saw him being extremely polite with her mother and grandmother as if he wanted to make a good impression on them.
What if he is doing these because he remembers we were good friends? What if he remembers the last five years he became a good friend of Aryan too? What if he remembers how he tried to maintain a good relationship with both of us? What if?
Imlie’s eyes sparkled up at the thought of him being able to know about the past like her. She offered him water and smiled a little. She had got her hopes high without knowing Aditya remembers none of the memories she wished him to remember.
“My Gudia is a bright student Babu Saheb. She also wants to be a journalist. You will be a great inspiration,” exclaimed Meethi.
This indeed surprised Aditya as he predicted to hear ‘police officer’ as her aim. The more he could remember he knew he was the one who influenced her to be a journalist. She didn’t have journalism in her goal list, just what made her change her aim before he appeared in her life, thought Aditya.
“She is bright indeed I can see from the certificates hanging on the wall. But being a journalist was it truly her only childhood dream? I mean perhaps she had different goals…like being a police officer” said Aditya looking at Imlie’s face straight.
This proved Imlie that he does remember the past lives of them. She felt happy that she was not the only one in this world who knew there was a past before time spinned it wheel backwards.
But the question remained should she tell him of her being aware of the past or just feign ignorance? She thought to keep an eye on him for a little more. She will be leaving tomorrow and there was no need to tell him everything right now. She might tell him in the future when she would be in Delhi but right now talking with him about the past would be quite risky.
Before Meethi could reply that she did aim to be a police officer before, Imlie cut her straight and replied, “Nope I don’t have that aim. I did have it in childhood when I didn’t decide on a career for myself. It changed as I grew up.”
Aditya looked at Imlie with a gaze which clearly said that he was trying to analyze her.
“Oh so you decided on the career already. What’s your next plan?”
“We are going to the city for my admission tomorrow. This might be the last time we are meeting” replied Imlie.
“What in the world are you saying?” Aditya questioned in fury and it was almost visible in his voice for a second.
Everyone was taken aback for a second and he composed again and said, “You are leaving for which city to study?”
“Any city in the U.P. only I suppose. I will try in different colleges as I got my higher-secondary mark sheet yesterday” Imlie said with a fake smile. The tune he used to express before has got her guard walls to rise a little and she avoided the mention of her going to Delhi.
Meethi got confused at her daughter’s lie but stayed silent on it. Even her grandmother decided to not expose her. After all, a relative is more trustworthy than a complete stranger.
“Oh…” Aditya exclaimed.
Later Imlie managed to change the topic and the conversation that followed was how he felt coming to the village; also about the puppet show which he saw last time when he was a kid and today got the opportunity to see it again.
After half an hour he left with the guy he came with and Chavi came later to help Imlie to pack her bags. Imlie talked about how they would proceed next and also informed Chavi that she won’t be able to contact much during her stay in Delhi this week. Once she buys a cell phone she will give her number and they could contact anytime.
The night passed and Imlie’s eyes opened at sharp 3:30 am. That’s the time she wakes up from last month, but what almost shocked her is that she saw Aditya standing in their backyard which connects with a grove. Imlie’s house is the last one in this lane. At first she thought this might be a mistake of her eyes but when he didn’t move much she knew he was real.
Aditya had already felt that this Imlie is quite different from the one he met in his last life. She isn’t naive at all and she knows how to hide things. He felt desperate at the thought that she would leave tomorrow and this would change their destiny. Name and face of the girl he knew in the last life is still the same but character and circumstances had changed already. He won’t meet her once she leaves for a city in U.P which is not even Delhi. She doesn’t deserve to be in any nameless college with so much talent, this was the only thing Aditya could think of.
“Babu Saheb, what are you doing here at this odd time?” Imlie asked as she came out.
He looked at her with a lot of questions in his mind because she is way different to his memories as well as not so different. But nope he decided to make her stay so he couldn’t hide it anymore.
He said, “Imlie the things I am going to say will sound a little odd but I hope you could believe me.”
Imlie gave him a confused look. She could somehow predict what he would say next.
“Time has played a big joke on us, this life is only the second to the prior one. I met you before and you were my wife”
“Wife?”, Imlie shrieked out in utter confusion. At least her face could convince anyone that she was truly confused.
“Yes we got married here in Pagdandia. Then you went to Delhi with me and eventually we became a happy couple. I wouldn’t have said these but since you said you are going to study in a nameless college that made my heart broken in pieces. You deserve so much better in life and I can give you everything you need. Nope not give I already gave you back in my last life too”
Imlie was dumbstruck by Aditya’s such reckless behavior. Where she had thought she would hardly see any drama as she was about to catch the 5: 00 am bus to Delhi, but nope here at her own house, own backyard and at 3:30 am she is watching a damned adult man trying to scam her into a marriage where he thinks he could provide her everything. How did this man ever be her first teenage love in her last life? How did she get infatuated with him in her last life? He was always just a plain dumb guy with high morals. Was she high on drugs at her last phase of teenage last time?
These thoughts engulfed Imlie as she was trying to process the speeches Aditya was giving to her. She felt like committing arson if this continues anymore but how would she stop this man from giving any more speeches and also control her inner desire to set him into real fire.
Aditya felt like he did the right thing by coming here trying to convince her. If his plan gets on the right path and the second phase of his plan goes right no one could stop him from marrying her.
“What a freak you are, Mister? I don’t even know you. Get out of our backyard. You are insane”, Imlie retorted in anger.
“You don’t believe me? But what I said was absolute truth. We loved each other a lot in our past lives” said Aditya, shedding tears and trying his best to convince her.
“I don’t believe you at all.” Imlie said with determination.
“Then why did you look at me with that gaze from the bus? It clearly felt that you wanted to say me something”
“Excuse me, it’s my first time meeting someone from a big city. It’s curiosity that made me look at you and guess what everyone had this curiosity from the time we heard that a journalist from Delhi is coming to our village”
“Nope, Imlie you do remember everything right? You wanted to be a journalist after you met me”
“Sorry but I can’t help my Dadda if I become a police officer. I would be trapped in a system which doesn't easily provide justice hence I chose Journalism after doing my own share of fair research. You had no role to play in my decision”
“Imlie you are lying… I can clearly see”
“And what do you see?”
“You aren’t behaving like strangers. You are talking with me”
“That’s because you are standing in my domain, this is my house, my space”
Suddenly Imlie realized and halted herself from talking; she could see the patterns, Aditya was just going round and round with almost the same words.
“You… What are you waiting for?” Imlie asked him with a doubt. Nope this man hadn’t stepped in her backyard without any plan, the stalling of time with the roundabout conversation was his plan from the very beginning.
“You noticed? Actually I know this village's rules very well. If you catch two opposite gender people at dawn you will make them marry each other. Isn’t it?” Aditya said with a victory smile which was clearly visible in his face and his tears failed to suppress it.
And Imlie could hear sounds of village people, she understood the commotion has risen in higher frequency and she could hear the footsteps proceeding towards her house.
“Congratulations you are getting married today Imlie Aditya Kumar Tripathi. I compromised my morals because you showed such haste in planning to leave this village”
Imlie looked at Aditya’s face with horror as Aditya’s face filled with ghost smiles. He has victory this time, neither Malini nor Aryan; not even this current Imlie could faze this marriage away. Yes, he has destiny on his side this time and it is proved. He had already made some suspicion in the lodge’s owner's mind when he came out at two o’clock making sure that the owner could see him leaving. He spent an hour in the grove which starts from Imlie’s house’s backyard and when he entered the grove from the opposite side he made sure the owner followed him to the entrance. Thanks to Imlie’s mom during his visit he came to know that she was waking up before 4:00 am these days. He smiled with pride to see victory only a few yards away.
This regression has so much to offer to him Aditya thought with satisfaction.
Imlie looked at him bewildered trying to process that the person standing in front of her had closed his eyes to his morals for the first time in both of his lives. Her plan was almost in ruins for this very man, she never thought he would plan things so fast on hearing of her leaving for the city next morning. She felt glad that she feigned ignorance but she did feel sorry for herself too because she underestimated him too much.
