Chapter 2:"The Longest Night"

Chapter 2: The Longest Night.

                Ragini found herself starring at a stranger ,he was wearing a doctor coat which meant he was one although at that moment she couldn't trust anyone , all it took him was two minutes before the person who tried to assault her fell down . Ragini eyes remained fixated on the unconscious assailant ,that her mind didn't heed to the stranger words , " do you want to file a complaint " he asked a bit loudly shocking her with the sound that she shivered a bit and turned towards him .

          " Yes .." she answered just a single word but he called the police and waited with her till they arrived ,she barely explained everything to the police and since he acted as a witness the police didn't intrude on her privacy and merely took her statement and left with the assailant who was wide awake by then to utter thousand protests . 

      " I know you are spooked and you wouldn't want to trust another man ..But I can't leave you alone like this ,so call your family to pick you up " he spoke up and yet ragini didn't want to involve them . If possible she wanted them to be unaware of it .

           They always treated her with kids gloves and often she misued it for her advantage , she was the fragile one awhile swara was her strength and after laksh disappearance her family took it up to an extreme level where she was turned into a glass doll and if they knew about this event it will mean more pampering which she didn't want to be subjected to as all she wanted was to be alone .

         " You can drive me home " she spoke up surprising even herself by her words ,she didn't trust him yet but his actions so far made him someone she didn't fear ,he looked like someone who could protect her from any danger, not only had he took down the detective ,he also offered her the doctor coat to cover herself .

         He looked surprised by her words but nodded his head in answer ,by the time they reached her home ,ragini tried to collect herself and not give away the day events to her parents . She returned his coat with a thanks and got down from the car ,she didn't even bother to ask his name because she didn't think they would likely meet again as she stepped inside her mother rushed to her side in haste . With a feigned headache she went to her room ,and only under the covers of the bedsheets did she finally let herself break down .

        The night sure felt like the longest for Swara when sleep eluded her. While her mind replayed back all the harsh words she threw at her husband for his role in Laksh disappearance. Ragini was already asleep by the time she arrived that Swara couldnt say anything to her . Yes she knew she crossed the line back that day but till yesterday it was an battle of who was more wrong and till yesterday her mind answered that it was her husband for being the one who put such an stupid condition not just one but two such stupid conditions. It was her husband who raised his hand to kill his cousin .

       The first one being him asking her not to try and fix the family. That was next to impossible, it not in her nature to stand aside and let people break apart. And he of all should be the one who stood by her instead of asking her to not help their family. And while she did break his promise, She did reunite the family a fact he refused to acknowledge when he decides to say such harshful words to her.

       A fact she still cant get over. No matter whatever crime she did ,her one solid faith is that he will be their for her always.And that faith shattered that day . So yes she crossed her line when Laksh went missing, she decided to hurt him not intentionally of course but part of her brain wanted to inflict the pain she experienced during that one phone call and she did hurt him by her words. But what she didnt expect was his second condition . That one where he asked her to stay or forget ever coming back.  For everyone it looked like she choose her sister over him and she very well cant blame anyone for that. Sure it did look like that but no the reason she walked away that day was not for her sister but because once again he broke her faith.Even if he was angry ,even if he was hurt . She couldnt fathom him telling her that she will not be welcomed back in to his life if she walked out.

She always prided herself with the fact that she was his weakness. She knew the intensity of his love for her and that was one of the reason she fell in love with him because she trusted his love for her and that was why even when the wounds inflicted by laksh lack of trust in her love was still fresh she fell in love with him because she believed he would always love her.  And She knew even if anyone and everyone fails her, he will be beside her. But he broke her faith in him when he broke her heart twice. And so she stayed away from him for 6 months. Because she was hurt. By his words. Not realizing her part in it .

         Well that was till yesterday but tonight that not the case,  Tonight she was plagued by the events that happened in their house. The words of Uttara supposed MIL still ringing in her ears. And Her Husband declaration that he was a monster . She didn't think of him as a monster ,she thought he was wrong to harm his cousin ,she thought when he cooled down he would understand why she was angry on him ,she thought he would come and talk with her and when he failed to do so ,she held on to her anger little too closely because if not it would mean she have to think of her heart that was breaking apart by his distance .  

With those thoughts fresh in her mind. Sleep has eluded her and then came the call. She was kind of expecting it, given the day events it was expected . She had been receiving this call from a unknown number for the last six months and each time the caller cut the call after few minutes of silence , she knew it was him so wasn't afraid ,  But right now she didnt know if she could handle his silence .

        But   His piercing words might crush her already broken heart. So with an heavy heart she answered the call.  And her hello went unanswered for awhile.And she really was not in the mood to make him talk either.  So she just listened and kept being silent. And when he refused to speak an word for over five minutes she tried to cut the call .

     " Giving up just like that Mrs Swara Sanskar Maheshwari " his words were slurred which meant all those calls were awhile he was drunk and the thought he was drinking made her feel guilty . Yet she wondered how their in explainable connection remained intact even when they broke each other hearts .

      " I thought you will not speak " she answered back truthfully , she didn't hadn't in her to argue with him today ,she was exhausted by the day events .

    " Well my dear wife you were wrong " his voice answered and the line went dead leaving her in tears . She had heard his voice with affection for her ,but right now it held too much bitterness that it felt like it consumed him .

     Sanskar Maheshwari reached for another glass of wine.  He lost count on the number of glass he drank tonight.He laughed at his fate .For always snatching away his happiness from him. First it was Kavita, Then he thanked his stars for giving Swara in his life.And once again his fate, she walked away from his life. Leaving him in more despair than before.

Swara the memories of her haunts him. She was someone he never dreamt to be lucky enough to have in her life.  When his love was termed as an act of betrayal, when she accused him of being happy at their forced wedding. When she walked away from his life because kavita entered, when she fell of the cliff .Their were countless moments he felt like he lost her. Countless moments when he felt like she will never be part of his life.But against all odd she fell in love with him, against all odd she came back from the dead, against all odds she married him again even to the point of running away from jail. And just when he felt like nothing and no one can separate them.She walked away from their life on her own.  There was no kavita,no sahil and no rajat, She walked away from his life on her own. And just like that his happiness was snatched away from him forever.

 No matter how much he drink the memories of her wont fade away .But still he would drink one more glass in an attempt to see if it helps and just like that entire bottle was empty. And he drifted to sleep due to the effects of it and even is dreams haunt him by showing him the memories of his life with her.  An just like that he realized their is no happiness left for him in this lifetime. Not without her.
