Mehek tried to move away but his arms held her firmly in place around her waist.

"Shaurya what...

"Where are you going? He asked her, tilting her chin towards him.

It was like the entire world froze. He pushed her hair behind her ear.

"Where are you going? He repeated his question.

"H-home Mehek stuttered out.

"You chased my date away. Now you have to pay He said.

"What do you mean

His face leaned in closer to her own. Mehek begged with her eyes. Kiss me. Please. Just do it.

Her eyes closed and she waited. He started to laugh. Mehek opened them and looked at him. Jerk.

She got of his lap, and started to walk away.

Shaurya followed her.

"You should have seen your face He said, laughing.

"You know Shaurya one day you will regret every single thing you ever did to me. But by then it will be too late Mehek said angrily.

Shaurya rolled his eyes.

Mehek ignored him mortified and ran off.

Mehek got home early that evening. And immediately she noted they had guests. Her legs shook as she walked into the sitting room. A family sat there. With her father and mother. A guy sat in the middle everything about him made her want to cringe.

"Mehek I want you to meet Sandeep Her father said, Mehek dropped her bag. Oh god no, this could not be happening. Her hands shook. She had forgotten all about this for one afternoon. Karuna ma looked at her worried. Mehek bit her lip and sat down. Sandeep stared at her like she was a goat for sale.

"Sandeep, own a chain of clubs Her father told her.

"He was the top of his class in a much bigger university than the one you are at Mehek understood immediately what her father was trying to say not only is he rich, he also is cleverer than Shaurya. Mehek blinked and wondered if her father understood, you don't just start loving someone else off the bat, just because they were better according to someone else. Her mother as always was completely utterly oblivious to everything.

"Mr Sharma your daughter is lovely Sandeep said, still leering at her. Mehek had never felt as uncomfortable as she did under his gaze. Her father was insane for thinking this guy was worth it. Mehek remained quiet and watched as Sandeep's mother kept trying to tell her about her charities and various other work. Mehek looked at Karuna ma helplessly.

News of Mehek's engagement spread like a veld fire. It was everywhere before the next week. Mehek stared at her hand, on the second finger sat a huge diamond ring.

She wondered what could she possibly do to stop this. Shaurya's future or her whole life what meant more to her? Shaurya's happiness of course.

Her hands trembled. Karuna ma looked at her as she opened her window.

"Mehek are you ok? She asked her, Mehek forced a blank smile onto her lips. Karuna ma went to her side and held her hands.

"Why are you doing this I can see how unhappy you are She asked her, Mehek's wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.

"Karuna ma I ... Mehek looked at her and she couldn't tell her. She would force Shaurya to quit studying. Mehek blinked and then looked away.

"Yes tell me love

"I want to be alone please Mehek could tell she had hurt her feelings. And her chest hurt. Mehek's phone rang and she saw the number on her phone. Sandeep.

"Hello She answered after the 4^th ring.

"Why did you take so long to answer? He asked her annoyance edging his voice.

"I was in the bathroom Mehek lied. She hated lying more than anything. She hated what her father was making her do and what he was making her become.

"Wear something really hot. I asked your father permission to take you out tonight we will go clubbing Mehek cringed at the tone in his voice. Ew.

"I am not feeling well maybe some other time She tried to get out of it. Well every day since their engagement he had been calling her and asking her out. But she had, had an excuse every day.

"I think you really are sickly sexy, Maybe I should come over and do a check up on you Mehek wanted to cuss at him but she held herself back.

"No thank you She said and hung up.

Mehek was about to go to bed, when she heard a noise down stairs.

Who would come here now? She wondered.

She wore an oversized brown t shirt.

She picked up a vase and went downstairs. There was no way a thief could rob her and get away with it.

She turned on the lights and wondered how the guards had not caught him.

A hand came over her mouth.

Lifting her off the ground. Mehek felt sick. It was Sandeep. She could smell his perfume. She pushed his hands away and glared at him.

"What are you doing here? She asked him. He looked at her like she was cotton candy in a fair. Mehek went towards the door and he grabbed her wrist hard. Mehek cried out.

"Let me go

"We are getting married soon He said pulling her forcefully against him and hugging her. Mehek pushed at his chest but he was too strong. She bit his shoulder, he let go of her immediately.

"You crazy f**king bitch you want to play rough He slapped her across her face, Mehek hit the floor and the side of her ears rang. Mehek heard the door open. Karuna ma came quickly to her side.

Her lip was bleeding. Sandeep tried to pull her away from Karuna ma.

Mehek kicked him hard in his shin.

"Who the hell do you think you are She took his ring and flung it at him.

"If you don't get out of my house I will call the police Mehek told him, He began to laugh.

"You little bitch. You think that by throwing your ring away it wont happen? Your father needs this wedding if he wants to continue his life style. So if I were you I would apologise

Mehek wondered, what her father would do if he found out that Sandeep had hit her and then she remembered something.

9 years ago.

Mehek had gotten into a fight with Rajeev Kapoor he was a bully and he was trying to steal Ajay's lunch and she had kicked him in nether region. To say the least her father was not happy.

"We do business with the Kapoor's Mehek if you don't apologise to him. Our business relationship will be affected

"Papa he is not a good person. Rajeev bully's other kids he deserves more than just one kick Mehek said, Karuna ma motioned for her to be quiet but she couldn't what was wrong was wrong, and she would not allow it to continue.

"Mehek do you really think Rajeev's father cares about right or wrong?

"Papa don't you care about right or wrong Her father glared at her.

"Karuna, what have you been teaching her? To talk back to her elders? If she doesn't apologise then I am going to fire you He muttered. Her father smiled sickly at her, he knew her weakness was Karuna ma. Mehek's eyes filled with tears.

"I hate you She said and ran out of his study.

"Mehek don't cry please Karuna ma told her, Mehek hugged her and cried against her chest.

"Karuna ma I will apologise to that Rajeev but I will never talk to my father again

"Don't say that, your father loves you...

"He doesn't he loves his business only Mehek told her. Karuna ma forced a smile on her face.

"Look Mehek, the world may say many things to us but we should always be at peace here She said pointing to her heart.

"And I would not want you on my account to not be at peace there She said touching her hair. Mehek held her hand.

"I will die without you Mehek confessed to her. She blinked and tears ran down her cheeks. She hugged Mehek.

"Sometimes I wish you were my own daughter She said, Mehek cried against her bitterly that night.

Rajeev came to her house. All Mehek wanted to do was smack him in his face again, yet he looked a little afraid of her rather than gloating, both of their fathers sat opposite each other. Shaurya came into the room with a tea tray.

"It was all my fault I am sorry Mehek Rajeev said, his eyes were on Shaurya who poured him a cup of tea silently. Mehek looked at him, and for the first time he was not just Karuna ma's son, her sort of child hood friend. Well their friendship was always sort of one sided. Mehek was more his friend then he her friend. He had done something to Rajeev. Rajeev was utterly terrified of him. Mehek looked at her father who was taken aback. Rajeev's father was as well.

"What? His father said.

"Mehek please I am sorry please forgive me He plead, Shaurya stood up and left. Mehek watched him go away and Rajeev's eyes followed the door as well.

Her heart skipped a beat. She smiled.

"You are forgiven She said and went out the door. Shaurya was cleaning the kitchen. Helping his mother, so she would not have as much work to do. She sometimes wondered when he studied.

"What did you do? She asked him, he did not look at her.

"What are you talking about?

"You did something to make him afraid like that what did you do?

"I have no idea what you are talking about He said, his cheeks warming. Mehek hugged him, without thinking.

"Thank you She said, He pushed her away from him.

"God you are annoying He muttered, Mehek ignored the insult. He did further deny it.

"Shaurya saved me She said wiggling her eyebrows at him, he threw the dish rag on her.

"Ew Mehek said throwing it back at him.

It was from that day that changed everything between them.
