AUGUST 20, 2009

CONNAUGHT HOTEL, DELHI

"Dammmnnn it, where have these two disappeared?" Aalekh muttered under his breath.

"Along with them, Prem has also disappeared. Or... is it the other way round." Ashank voiced aloud his opinion.

"God knows which way it is but right now Ashank you should go back to your job, otherwise your absence will be noticed." Sneha pointed out the practical aspect of the problem which they had on their hands right now. Ashank didn't want to go but understood that it was the only thing which could be done now. It should be paid immediate attention. So unwillingly, he nodded and left.

"Now what Aalekh? Where do you think Abhi and Ritika could have gone?" Sneha asked in a worried voice.

"Even I'm at a loss Sneha. What's more if we don't get any news from them then we will have to inform Chief about their disappearance." Aalekh replied in a tense voice.

"And along with them, we will have to report about Prem's disappearance as well. And if something turns out to be wrong, then all our efforts will go down the drain. Aalekh, we have been following this plan since five months, all our hard work will be in vain."

"Don't worry Sneha. I have full faith on Abhi and Ritika, they won't let us down. Have patience." Aalekh consoled her.

"Even I trust them, but right now I am more worried about their well ' being."

The conversation came to an end with the ringing of Sneha's cell.

Rajveer yawned and stretched himself. He was thankful that he had got up on right time. He walked up to the window and drew back the curtains. The rays of the morning sun filtered in through the glass panes and illuminated the room. Rajveer opened the sliding windows and leaned out to take a look.

It was a beautiful scene. At 7 O' clock in the morning, the early commuters were already out on the road. Some people were jogging down the pavement; a few others were having their morning walk. The chirping of the birds caught his attention and he looked up to see them return back to their nests after collecting their food. "Early bird catches the prey." He thought wryly as he kept looking at the flock of birds filling the sky. It was a beautiful sight and he knew it was because the hotel boasted of a few big trees; otherwise such sights were rare in the overcrowded city. All that could be seen were lots and lots of crows.

His attention was drawn by the figure sitting in a corner of the garden just near the gate. She was dressed in a white coloured chudidaar kameez and was working on her laptop. A folder lay near her on the bench. As he watched her enthralled, she finished her work, collected her things, came out of the garden area on the concrete pathway and walked back to the hotel. All of a sudden she collided with somebody and dropped the folder which flew open and all the papers flew around. Apologizing profusely, the couple bent down to help her collect the papers. He recognized them to be Sneha and Aalekh. He saw the entire thing happen before his eyes but what he couldn't see was the deft way in which Sneha slipped a paper along with the other papers into her folder. With a smile and a word, Sneha and Aalekh walked out of the hotel. Rajveer could discern their hurried footsteps but couldn't understand the reason for it. As he watched, Naina walked back to the hotel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aditi had spent a very restless night. Naina's words kept ringing in her ears. "Vehement denial usually means one and only thing... a big YES." What was she doing? What was she trying to hide? She spent the entire night debating with her own self and made a decision. She had to talk to Prem. Resolutely she got up and quickly dressed herself. She would have to finish her task before the usual proceedings of the day began. She opened her jeweler box and took out a pair of chandelier ear rings and looked at it with affection. They were her birthday gift from Prem. She had always wondered how Naina could carry such big ear rings with grace. They always touched up to her shoulders and yet she carried it with perfect ease. Now these ear rings were not that large. But her profession didn't allow her to dress in such jewelleries. She put them on. They were of light pinkish hue which matched with her pink skirt. She had put on a matching top with a funky belt round her waist and a matching pair of sandals. She checked herself in the mirror and was satisfied that everything was all right. She then picked up her laptop, her mobile and the room keys. Closing and locking the door, she went up to Prem's room on the fifth floor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The deep blue coloured BMW was racing down the National Highway towards Noida at a break neck speed. Its occupants were engaged in a heated fight.

"What the hell made you hide that document in Naina's folder Sneha? Don't you realize how important that thing was?"

"I'm aware of its importance that is why I hid it there in the folder." Sneha shot back angrily. "You don't have to teach me my work Aalekh. I know it very well."

"It seems that you have lost all sense of what is right and wrong and have become careless."

"Just shut up Aalekh. If I have hidden the document then it is my headache to retrieve it. You don't have to bother about it. Right now, you concentrate on your job for which you are summoned. Abhi gave us the number of the vehicle in which they are held up. Catch up with it as quickly as you can." She bit out in anger.

"Then what the hell do you think I'm doing at this hour on the road driving at such a high speed? I'm not a racing maniac, that's Ritika's department."

"It would be really very nice of you Aalekh if you stop arguing with me and concentrate on the road ahead." she said brusquely.

"For a change, why don't you shut u............ Sneha, look ahead. That's the car I guess." His tone had suddenly undergone a change.

"Yes, the number is the same." Sneha said excitedly. "Aalekh, overtake the car and stop it. But before doing so, pull on your mask."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aditi knocked on the door of Prem's room. Surprisingly, the door opened at her touch. "Prem has kept the door open?" Aditi wondered. "Was he expecting someone?" she pushed the door open and entered inside. Nothing in the room was undisturbed. The bed had not been made. A cup was kept on the bed side table. Prem was used to a cup of tea early in the morning, after that he always used to go for a walk. It was his daily routine. "Hasn't he returned from his morning walk?" Aditi thought
But it was well past his time of return. For some unknown reason, Aditi became very worried. Something was wrong with Prem. She quickly took out her mobile phone and dialed his number, but on getting no response she got more tensed. "Why isn't Prem responding to my call? He isn't picking up his cell. What's wrong with him? I should inform Rajveer sir about this." Taking care to close and lock the door behind her, she quickly moved towards the lift.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Naina opened the door to find Rajveer standing outside. "Hi!!! Good Morning!" she greeted him.

"Morning Naina. I was just going to ring the bell." He responded with a smile.

Naina didn't reply, just gave half a smile. Raj didn't know what had spoiled her mood now because he had seen her in a good mood earlier in the morning. He wanted to know what was she trying to hide from him and here he had to deal with her foul mood. She however didn't take it out on him; instead she moved a little and motioned him to come inside.

The look on her face told him that something was bothering her, she had gone very quite. Rajveer was in two moods ' whether to go by her innocent looks and believe her for what she was professing to be or to go by his instincts and try to find out what she was trying to hide. He decided to follow the latter and played accordingly. He needed to keep her with him 24 hours to know what or who she was. "Naina, I need your help." He said.

Naina looked at him enquiringly but before she could ask what the matter was, there was a knock on the door. The flow of the moment broke and both looked at each other in surprise. The door bell rang again followed by persistent, hurried knocks. Naina went and opened the door and found Aditi standing outside. "Aditi!!!"

The moment she set her eyes on Aditi, Naina knew that something was wrong. "Aditi, what's the matter? Is anything wrong?"

"N... Naina, Prem is missing." Aditi managed to mumble. There was utter shock on her face.

"Are you okay Aditi? And what do you mean by Prem is missing. Come, sit here first. Take a grip on yourself." Naina gently pushed Aditi on to the couch and handed her a glass of water. Meanwhile, Raj too came forward. Aditi meanwhile was close to hysterics. Trying hard to control her sobs, she told Raj and Naina about all that she had seen in Prem's room. The moment Rajveer heard Aditi's story, he immediately understood what had happened. Asking Naina to take care of Aditi he rushed outside.

Aditi meanwhile was trying hard to control her tears. "I just hope he is all right." She said in a very slow voice.

Naina slowly patted the distraught girl in front of her; she was a picture of misery. Prem's disappearance had affected her tremendously and with the gloomy expression that the three had on their faces the previous evening, Naina wasn't very much surprised at the sudden turn of events. She also had a very clear idea about the perpetrator of the crime, but right at that moment she chose to keep quiet deciding to tackle it later. Right now, she had another important work on her hand. "You are worried about him, aren't you?"

Aditi simply nodded her head as the tears which she had been holding in check till now began to flow out unrestrained. Unable to control herself any longer, she hugged Naina and started to cry inconsolably. "Calm down Aditi, calm down. Take a grip on yourself." She rubbed her back and sat with her for a long time. "You love him, don't you?" she asked Aditi after a very long time.

Aditi couldn't deny this time; she nodded her head in acceptance and started to sob. Just then, the door opened and Rajveer came inside. Naina looked up as he entered. He read the question in her eyes and nodded his head a little confirming her worst fears. Aditi could sense the presence of somebody in the room and turned to find her senior standing beside her. She quickly wiped her tears and stood up. "I'm afraid that Prem has been kidnapped."

Aditi collapsed on the couch while Naina stood up. "Need any help?" she offered.

"You stay with Aditi. She will need all the support that she can get right now. I will try to find out Prem." He said.

"Will you be going to the police?" she asked.

"If nothing turns out to be positive, them I'm afraid that's what I'll have to do." He went out leaving Naina with a completely broken Aditi.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Both of them picked up the black coloured masks lying on the dash board of the car. Then Aalekh increased the speed of the vehicle. It was not difficult for a BMW to overtake the Indica. Within seconds the Indica had to stop in its tracks. "What the hell is wrong with you?" the man in the driving seat poked his head out of the window. "What do you want?" Another man seating besides him said something, and both of them got out of the car. They were rough looking men and were from the ruffian category.
Sneha and Aalekh exchanged glances and climbed down with their guns pointed at their opponents. Almost as if in a flash, two more people climbed down from the back seat. All the four of them had guns pointed in the direction of Sneha and Aalekh. "Leave Prem." Sneha commanded.
"No chance of that. And you two most certainly are his friends. You know about him. So you will have to join him whether you want it or not." The second person who seemed to be their boss signaled to the other three. They came forward towards Sneha and Aalekh. Just then, four simultaneous shots rang out. Sneha and Aalekh had fired without any warning. The people in the front rows took the bullet in their forearm and shoulder respectively. The gun flew out of their hands. The other two bullets had been fired by Ritika and Abhimanyu. Like Sneha and Aalekh, they too had masks on their face. Ritika had climbed out of the dickey while Abhimanyu had been following the car on a pair of roller skates. When he had seen the BMW approaching, he had hid himself in a roadside ditch, not sure whether the approaching people were friend or foes. He then saw the number plate and quickly clambered out of the ditch and again followed them. The four ruffians were lying wounded on the road and a kick and a punch from Aalekh and Abhimanyu made them lose their senses. The girls meanwhile had dragged a senseless Prem out of the car and were trying to restore him to his senses.
"No use." Ritika said after a while. "He has been chloroformed. He will come back when the effect wears off."
"Then what should we do with him? We cannot take him back to the hotel. By now his absence would have been noticed. And if he reappears, then it will spoil our plan." Sneha pointed out.
"There is only one thing to be done." Aalekh joined them after tying the four miscreants. "Take him to the head quarters."
"And what about these four idiots?" Sneha asked.
"Aalekh and I will deal with them. You two take him to the head quarters. Now be quick, this road won't remain deserted for long." Abhi and Aalekh quickly carried an unconscious Prem to their car and Ritika and Sneha drove off with him. Aalekh and Abhimanyu dumped the four goons into the back seat and followed suit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Raj spent the whole day with the police searching for Prem, but he was untraceable. He tried to call Prem up on his cell, but it was switched off. The last call on his cell was traced on to the highway running from Delhi to Noida, after that there was no trace of Prem. Tired and exhausted, Rajveer returned back to the hotel.

The news of Prem's kidnapping had spread like a wild fire in the hotel. The police had visited the hotel in the morning. Now when Raj returned he found every second person inquiring about Prem. Avoiding the crowds, he made way towards the staircase instead of the lift when he thought he heard the silky soft voice which he had grown so used to in the last few days. Surprised, he turned back to locate the sound and found it emanating from behind the closed glass door. He noticed it to be the bar.

Very slowly, he opened the door and peeped inside. It was a shocking site for him. He found a completely drunk Rajesh Solanki sprawled on one of the sofa with a glass in his hand. Naina was sitting near him refilling his glass. "But that was a master plan darling." She said with a laugh.

"I told you, he cannot escape. I had been plotting this for a long time."

As Rajveer watched with rage and disgust mounting inside him, he saw Naina get up from her seat. Immediately a hand shot out and imprisoned her wrist. "Where are you going honey?" he slurred in his speech. Smiling, Naina again sat down, this time near him. Rajveer closed the door and walked away in a huff. Neither of the two occupants noticed him. An hour after his departure, Naina stood near the unconscious body of Rajesh Solanki. "You chose the wrong girl Solanki. You are now dead, finished; finished forever." And dramatically she dropped the glass on the floor which shattered to a million pieces. In her other hand, she held a bottle of sleeping pills. She smiled in a superior way and left the bar.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prem opened his eyes to find himself lying on a bed in a dark room. It took time for him to adjust his eyes to the darkness, after a while, it was not that difficult. The light from the night lamp cast a soft glow in the room. He tried to move his head but winced in pain. He put his hand on his head and found a bandage there. Why would the kidnappers mind bandaging his wound?
He remembered he had been taking his morning stroll and had wandered to a relatively deserted area of the road when someone hit him hard on the back of his head and he fainted. How long he had remained unconscious, he had no idea of that. He was sure he had been chloroformed, otherwise he wouldn't have remained senseless for so long.
With a little effort, he got up and leaned back on the headrest. He couldn't know where he was. He checked his wrist, but then remembered that he hadn't worn his wrist watch in the morning. He felt his pockets for the mobile, but it was missing. He leaned back and closed his eyes in frustration. How was he going to contact his colleagues now?
The door opened and someone came inside the room. He got up with a jerk. "Who is it?" he called out. The person in question switched on the neon lamp and its bright light bathed the room causing him to close his eyes for a few seconds before he could adjust to the glow. Then he noticed a girl standing near the bed looking down at him with a smile on her lips. "So finally you are awake. We had been waiting for a long time."
"Waiting for what?" he questioned.
"Waiting for you to come back to your senses." She replied. "So how are you feeling now?"
"All right I guess. Though the head is paining a bit."
"It will be all right by the morning. But first of all, you should have your dinner. Wait here, I'll get it."
"It is dinner time?"
"It is past dinner time." The girl laughed and turned to go.
"One second." Prem stopped her. She turned to face him. "Who are you?" he asked.
"You don't expect me to be the kidnapper, do you Mr. Juneja?"
"Prem will do. And no, I don't think you are the kidnapper. But even if you are, I never expected a kidnapper to be so charming."
The girl burst out laughing. After a while, she said, "Rest assured. You are with your friends. And my name is Ritika." With that, she went out of the room leaving him in a confused state.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Naina came out of the lift and walked down the corridor, all the while busily making plans to counter Rajesh Solanki. She decided to tell Rajveer all that she had learnt, but there was no trace of him. Probably he hadn't returned yet, or else he would have surely called her up. She looked at her watch, it was almost midnight. "I wonder what is taking him so long."

Just as she had inserted the key in the lock, her sharp ears detected the faint sound of a door being opened behind her. But before she could turn around, a hand gripped her fingers and the key, forcibly turning the keys in the opposite direction locking the door shut. Then with a brutal strength, she was pulled across the corridor. A door barged open and was slammed shut and she was forcibly turned by her shoulders to find herself staring into the dark brown eyes of the person she had been searching for such a long time. But right now, his eyes were red with rage and there was a strange intensity in them, an intensity which she could not place. It was not the usual power that she saw in his eyes every day, it was strangely different. "Rajveer!!! What's up?" she managed to speak.

Instead of a reply, she found herself being pushed back onto the wall. His hands slid down and held her arms in a grip which was so tight that it hurt her. "Raj, you are hurting me." She winced in pain.

His hands tautened and he increased the pressure. "You should also get a feeling of pain." He hissed through clenched teeth.

"But what have I done to deserve this?" she was at a loss.

"What have you done? As if you don't know. Why did you go there? Why? Tell me why???" With every why, he was increasing the pressure on her, so much so that both of them felt as if they would burst from it. Naina could take it no longer and started to fidget. When he didn't budge, she used her skills and with surprising strength for a thin, weak young girl she slipped out of his grip.

"What do you mean Raj?" she asked him bemused.

"Nothing. If you are so ignorant that you cannot understand, then I don't see any use of saying anything." He said in a straight voice. He was so angry that he wanted to lash out at her, but he controlled himself. He had already lost control over himself even though it was for a short time. Maybe Naina would place it to be his frustration over not finding Prem. But if she wanted him to know where she had been, she would tell him on her own. He resolved not to ask her anything. "What about Aditi? How is she?"

"She is all right. I made her have her dinner and then asked her to sleep. She is in my bedroom." Naina replied.

Rajveer nodded and remained silent. She waited for him to say something, but when he didn't, she spoke "Raj, I have some news." He turned and looked at her with a sudden hope in his heart. "Is it about Prem?" he asked.

She nodded in affirmative and then said, "I have found out. This was done by Rajesh Solanki. He is the mastermind behind your colleague's kidnapping."

Raj simply stared at her. He was too shocked to react. "Whatever for?" he mumbled.

"Are you really as ignorant as you are pretending to be Major Shekhawat?" Naina asked sardonically.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Raj stared at her for a long time. The fact that she had penetrated his disguise and knew about his real identity was too much to digest. He was still flabbergasted as to how she had done it. Then the enormity of the situation dawned on him. "Naina, please keep it to yourself." He pleaded.
"Rajveer, I would have done it long before if I had any intention of doing so." Naina said simply. "Can I have a seat?" she asked. Rajveer motioned her towards the sofa.
A minute later, Naina started telling him all that Rajesh Solanki had blurted out under the influence of the drug. He had come to know that Prem, Aditi and Rajveer were army people. He had followed Prem the previous day when he had gone out to confirm about the presence of traitors in the Singhania Group of Enterprises and had arrested an employee. He was Rajesh's henchman. That was how Rajesh got an inkling of Rajveer's true identity. Then he planned the kidnapping of Prem and executed the plan this morning. But unfortunately for him, somebody had waylaid his goons on the way and rescued Prem. Nobody knew what happened to Prem but the goons were in lock up.
"Who told you all this?" Rajveer was amazed.
"Rajesh told me. Also the industrial fare is a cover up. Rajesh's actual plan is the secret deal of arms with the dreaded terrorist group who operate from across the borders. Rajesh is the leader of all the people who worked incognito in the country for the terrorists. They hold top positions in the private jobs and some have even penetrated the government as well. He had your identity confirmed through them." She concluded.
"Is that how you knew about me?" Rajveer asked after a pause.
"No, how I found out and why I kept quiet is yet another story. Reserve it for later. You tell me how much you know, so that I can tell you if you have left anything."
"Well, I knew about this arms deal, that is why I'm here. But I didn't know the identity of the ring leader. Also this information about penetrating the private and public sector is indeed news to me. I mean, if he can confirm my identity through his people, then they have penetrated really deep into the country's defense secret as well."
"Yes, you are right. Besides Rajesh is not operating alone. He has a partner in crime."
"Who is he?"
"It isn't a he, it's a she. To make matters simple, it's Roshni."
"Oh!!! I see." And he really did see. It was a brilliant idea, to come here as a businessman and strike a deal with terrorists. He himself was a terrorist anyway. It was very difficult to believe, but the truth nonetheless. Traitors were nothing new to him. He mentally began to chalk out a plan to catch them. But his main concern was Prem. If Rajesh Solanki had lost him, then where could have Prem disappeared? Was he with the friends or the foes? He wondered if even Prem realized where he was. Then there was Naina to be taken care of as well. Whenever Rajesh Solanki would come to his senses, he would realize what he had done. Then his attention will shift towards Naina and he will surely try to kill her. Her protection was also a major task on his hand. "What made you go to that Rajesh Solanki by the way?" he burst out at her in irritation.
Naina had been watching her silently all this while. She smiled at his expression. Irritation was written large on his face, and he was looking at her in anger which was mixed with concern. "Jealous?" Naina teased him.
"Why should I be? I was just worried about you. You don't realize the danger you are in." he tried to cover up, control himself.
Naina laughed out. "Prove it." She challenged.
The laughter was light, the challenge unintentional. But it struck Rajveer with a force and a second later, Naina found herself pinned against the wall trapped in his arms. "What if I am?" he hissed through clenched teeth as all the previous anger and resentment found their way back onto his countenance. Naina stared at him in surprise, suddenly understanding the reason of his previous anger.
"Insecure?" she asked mischievously forgetting every trace of the pain.
"Why should I be? I'm just concerned about your safety." he answered without letting her go.
"Prove it to me that you are not." She said with a smile.
"What sort of proof do you want?" he asked.
"Prove it to me that you are neither jealous nor insecure." This time her voice held the marked indication of a challenge.
Rajveer looked at her intensely. "You have challenged me Naina. Think again, or else you will regret it later." He warned.
"Whether I regret it or not will be my headache." There was not a faintest trace of hesitation in her voice.
Rajveer took one dark desperate look at her and then bent his face down. A second later his lips touched hers and Naina felt as if an electrical current had jolted her. But there was no respite now; there was no way to escape. But she didn't want to escape. She knew what was coming, she had challenged him intentionally. She rejoiced at his touch on her lips. He kissed her deeply, then put her lower lip in between his and sucked it. When he felt her responding, he released her hands, and wrapped his arms round her waist. In an instant her hands went round his neck and she drew him tightly towards her. His tongue probed its way into her mouth and intertwined with hers. They deepened the kiss and remained firmly locked in each other's arms, kissing fervently, passion coursing through their veins until their need for air drove them apart.
But they didn't let go off the other. He bent forward and brushed his lips against her forehead, this time gently and with infinite care. After such a passionate yet rough handling, Naina hadn't expected such a gentle treatment from him.Slowly he slid down to her eyelids, at the same time rubbing the nape of her neck with his one hand and cupping a side of her face with the other as he slowly stroked her cheek with his thumb. He moved towards her cheek and placed a kiss there, then nibbled playfully on her ear lobe before again transferring his attention to her lips. She responded with equal vigour, drowning herself in his kiss, in his arms, in his masculinity.
Slowly he moved downwards, kissing her on her neck and finally rested his lips on the little hollow at the base of her neck where her pulse was beating wildly. He kissed her there and then looked up at her. With a finger, he traced a line from her cheek to that hollow. He felt the tightening of her grip, but she didn't avert her eyes. She met him straight in her eyes and there was no hesitation in them, no questioning, and no guilt feeling. She was very comfortable in his arms and he could see that in her eyes.
She cupped his face in her palms and looked at him for a long time, then smiled slowly and pulled his face closer to hers. She kissed him on the corner of his lips, brushed her lips on his cheek before shifting attention towards his lips and placed a passionate kiss there; this time shorter than the previous ones, then pulled apart and said very softly, "I don't think any of us would be able to sleep tonight."
He smiled and kissed her once again on the cheek. They stayed in each other's arms for a long time. All of a sudden, the image of a laughing Prem and excited Aditi came in front of his eyes. His eyes snapped open and with a crash he came back to reality.
"I'm sorry Naina." He said softly out of the blue.
"Sorry??? Sorry for what Raj?" she asked in a faintly puzzled tone.
He didn't reply, simply pulled apart. They kept weighing in other in silence, hardly saying anything. His departure hurt her to the core. Why did he come close if he had to pull away? With leaden feet, she turned and left the room.
