Chapter 9
[MEMBERSONLY] [NOCOPY] PART 9 UPDATED ON 01/04/21
"Because I think I need to help you before I help him." Vineet smiled.
Virat was confused.
"Please sit down."
Virat was still confused, "I don't understand anything. You are here to help my brother. I don't need help. He does."
"I need to ask you a few questions. If you want to help your brother, you have to co-operate."
"But..."
"Trust me, I know what I am doing. This is for your brother. But if you don't want to then it's..."
"Apne Jeeva ke liye to main apni jaan bhi de sakta hu."
"Wonderful. Now sit down."
Virat sat down.
"Let's start. Tell me five values you like about Samrat."
"Just five?" Virat smiled.
"Aap chahein to zyada bhi bata sakte hain baad mein. Filhal ke liye five things will be okay."
"My brother." A glint appeared in his eyes, "My brother is a very just man, I have never seen anyone like him. Always sides with what is right. He is a man of words. If he gave you his word, he will do it. You can count on him. No matter what. He is family oriented. He's always been very attached to our family. He does his duty with utmost respect. And...he is the best brother in the world." Virat's eyes got moist in the end.
"Hmm. Sounds like a perfect man, a perfect human being."
"He is." Virat smiled.
"But no one is perfect in this world Mr. Chahvan."
"He is," Virat said with pride in his eyes.
"Hmm. A perfect jodi of brothers. Okay tell me what are your top five values?"
"My values?"
"Yes."
"I always keep my promises. I do my duty without fail. I stand by what is right. I love my family. And..."
"You can die for your brother." Vineet completed the list for him.
"Hmm" Virat nodded.
"You said, you always keep your promises."
"Yes."
"Is there no promise you have broken?"
Main apne dil mein, apni zindagi mein kisi aur ko jagah nahin dunga.
Virat remembered his promise to Patralekha and his marriage to Sai.
He nodded.
"Ok. So you have broken a promise or not? What do you mean?"
"Yes...I have."
"Hmm, interesting. So you don't always keep your promises."
Virat looked away. "Haalaat kuch aise..."
"Next question," Vineet interrupted and Virat looked up, "Have you always fulfilled your duty?"
Virat remembered his inability to get his family arrested after Pulkit's fiasco. Although he stopped because Sai and Pulkit stopped him, he somewhere in his heart did not want to do it.
Virat looked around and shook his head in a no.
"Hmm. So you have failed to do your duty properly."
Virat couldn't say anything.
"Next. Have you always stood by your family?"
Virat was suddenly reminded of the time when he got married to Sai and brought her home.
He shook his head in no.
"Oh. So you are not as family oriented...anyways. Do you think you are a good brother."
Virat was reminded of his sacrifice and immediately Samrat's image in mental asylm appeared before his eyes.
"No, I am not a good brother." Virat shook his head and a tear streamed out of his eyes.
Vineet picked up a glass of water from the table and offered it to Virat and he took it but couldn't drink it. But he wiped his eyes.
"Next is rapid fire round. You have to be quick...ok?"
Virat nodded.
"Let's start. What is worse for you? Samrat being in this condition? Or Samrat being in this condition because of you?
Virat was dumbfounded at this question. He couldn't utter a word.
"Which is the better option for you? Samrat being in the house in this condition and remains like this forever? Or Samrat being completely fit and fine away from all of you and you and other family members will never know it?"
Virat was going to say one of the options but had to rethink and couldn't say anything.
"Ok, final question. Why did you leave Patralekha for Samrat?"
Virat looked up confidently as he knew the answer to this question, "I..."
"Was it because you love your brother? Or the reason is something else?"
"Because I..." Virat was in doubt.
"Come on Mr. Chahvan. This is rapid fire round. You cannot take this much time."
"Because I love my brother."
"Why did you have to rethink?"
"I am confident."
"If you were confident, you wouldn't rethink."
"I am confident."
"Ok. I believe you. Now tell me what are all the emotions that come up in your mind when you think of him? Be quick."
"Love, admiration, respect, appreciation, care, inspiration, env..." Virat stopped.
"Envy?"
Virat nodded, "Yes. A little bit of envy is a form of admiration. You should know this. You are a well-known psychiatrist." Virat said with a hint of sarcasm.
"Of course. I still have a lot of things to learn. So sweet of you to enlighten me." Vineet smiled, "by the way, why are you envious of him?"
"I said I admire him and the en..."
"Yeah, yeah. Envy is a form of admiration. I know that. Now, thanks to you. I am just curious what are the things that make you env...sorry admire him."
"My Jeeva is perfect. He is the perfect example of how a human being should be. Dutiful. Responsible. Cares for everyone. No one can be like him. He is matchless. He..." Virat didn't have a smile on his face while saying this.
"Hmm. So you are pursuing something you know is unattainable."
"What" Virat looked up in confusion.
"Ok. Now let me ask you a few more questions. You remember. I asked you about the failures of each of your values?"
"Hm"
"You must have thought about the incidents that made you feel like you failed. Right?"
"Yes."
"Think of the incident where you broke the promise. Go back to the place where you broke the promise. Now tell me, if there was no promise. Would you have hesitated to do what you did? And would you still have done what you did? Do you ever regret that decision?"
Virat had never thought about that before. But now he loves Sai and knows that he was attracted to her qualities since the very beginning. A smile appeared on his face.
"No, I wouldn't have hesitated. And I would still have done what I did" He replied without hesitation, "and I don't regret that decision."
"You seem quite sure about this one."
Virat smiled.
"Ok. Now think of the incident when you failed to do your duty. I assume it was the duty of a police officer. Am I right?"
"Yes" Virat replied.
"Then tell me if you were not a police officer and didn't have to do that duty would you still have taken that decision which you did and do you regret it?"
Who would i be if not a police officer
"Tell me. Why are you quiet?"
"Yes," Virat said thoughtfully, "I still would have done the same." He thought and said further, "and in my heart I don't regret it."
"Think of the incident when you failed to stand by your family. If you weren't a family oriented person would you still have done the same and do you regret it?"
"I would have done the same." Virat thought aloud, "and I don't regret it."
"Hmm. So you went against your values but you would have done the same and you don't regret it. So that means you were listening to your heart in those incidents." Vineet looked at Virat who was now thinking deeply, "Now think of that decision you made that makes you think you are not a good brother. Would you still have made that decision if you didn't think your brother had feelings for her? Why do you think you are not a good brother? Do you really regret it? If yes, then why?"
"Ye...," Virat paused, "yes, I would still have made that decision. I don't regret not getting married to her...I regret getting her married to my brother" Virat was reminded of the first thought that came to his mind when he saw Patralekha as Samrat's would be wife. The first thought that came to his mind was that she chose Samrat over him. She too chose Samrat over him.
Even if Samrat wasn't attracted to her, I would have still made that decision.
"If I'm not wrong that was the beginning of you gradually going against the values you think you have without knowing." Vineet probed.
"You are right" Virat narrowed his eyes and looked in his distant past and hazy memories appeared before his eyes.
"Do you understand why?"
"It's because... It's because I saw the failure of those values that I adopted?"
"The values you thought would help you gain what Samrat got?"
"Yes"
"So those values don't completely belong to you? Who do they belong to?"
"Samrat" came out of Virat's mouth.
"And the person who made those decisions going against those values is?"
"...me"
"Do you think you are not a good brother? Why? Because your sacrifice for your brother made him like this?"
"No, my act of jealousy made him this way." Virat had a horrific realisation.
