Chapter 5

A day later, all of Sai's test results had come and the surgery was indeed proven to be successful without any haemorrhaging or fatal blood clots. The final test that was left was to actually identify Sai's state of mind but because apart from her blinking gestures and occasional smiles, she did not utter a single word. This was worrisome for the doctors too but all everyone could do was wait patiently. Sai was now moved to a recovery room which meant people could now meet her more freely.

On the other hand, Pulkit could not shake off the feeling which has been eating him from inside but he really couldn't share it with anyone without any surety. He observed that Sai greeted everyone with a warm smile and her smile was, even more, brighter when she met Virat. Virat was overly ecstatic thinking all was well between them. Sai's friends came every day to meet her, to talk to her and tell her about medical college. All she used to do is blink and smile and then finally on the 5th day in the recovery ward, Sai spoke to her Virat sir in a very meek voice.

"Virat sir, kya aap mujhse abhi bhi gussa hai? Main jaanti hu ki jo maine kaha aur kiya, woh mujhe nahi karni chahiye tha. I am really very sorry. Woh bas ek kamzor pal tha ki maine aisa kadam utha liya. Aap fikr matt kijiye, main dobara se aisi koi harkat nahi karungi. Waise pariwaar waale bada pyar kar rahe the mujhe. Kitne pyaar se mujhse milne aayen. Main sab se milkar bahut khush hu. Pal bhar ke liye laga hi nahi ki asal mein yeh mera pariwar hai hi nahi."

Virat was stunned to hear her melodious voice after so long. Tears kept falling endlessly from his eyes as he stood staring at this girl who had become his heartbeat. He slowly walked towards her and sat on a stool near her

"Tum theek ho na Sai? Tumhe pata hai meri toh jaan hi nikal gayi thi tumhe uss halat mein dekh ke. Aur kitni baar kaha hai Sai, yeh saare sirf mera pariwar nahi hai, yeh tumhara pariwaar bhi hai. Aur kyun nahi woh tumse pyar se mile? mujhse zyada tumse jo pyar karte hai sab," replied Virat smilingly.

Sai gave a very confused look and slowly asked

"Main kuch samjhi nahi, Virat sir. Aapne kab kaha mujhse ki aapka pariwar mera pariwar hai? Aur woh mujhe aapse zyada pyar kyun karege? Woh toh sirf mujhe kuch hi dino se jaante hai na? Par aap toh unka khoon, unke bete ho. Khair, yeh sab chodiye aur yeh bataiye, aap toh Nagpur wapas jaane waale the na? Toh phir wapas kaise aaye? Aap ko kaise pata chala ki maine apni jaan lene ki koshish ki? Aur usse bhi important baat Usha maushi, Kaale kaka, Pari, yeh sab kaha hai? Yeh log mujhse milne kyun nahi aaye? Maana maine galti ki aur gussa hona unka hakk hai par ek bhi roz mujhse milne nahi aaye," continued Sai slighly pouting sadly.

Shock was an understatement of the blow that Virat just felt in his guts. Something was wrong with his Sai. That much he had figured. She was blabbering weird things. 

"Jaan lene ki koshish? Ye kya bolrahi hai?" he thought. "Iska toh accident huwa hai."

His thoughts were broken by Sai's voice.

"Virat sir kaha kho gaye? Kuch pucha na maine?"

"Huh? Mera matlab ha Sai, woh kya hai na, tumhari condition kaafi kharab ho gayi thi toh tumhe yaha Nagpur lana pada air lift karwa ke. Usi dauran Pari ki bhi tabiyat thori si kharab ho gayi toh baaki log nahi aa paye. Aur Usha maushi ne mannat maangi hai ki jab tak tumhe discharge nahi milta aur doctor's ke taraf se all clear nahi milta tab tak woh mandir mein rahekar waha logo ki sewa karegi."

Virat's quickly cooked up story seemed to register in Sai's brain and she seemed to buy it.

"Usha maushi bhi na. Kuch bhi ajeeb ajeeb si mannate maang leti hai," said Sai, love clearly emitting from her voice. Pari ab theek toh hai na?" she asked.

"Ha sai, woh theek ho rahi hai aur tumhe bhi jaldi se theek hona hai na toh please jaldi se yeh dawaiya khao aur so jao thodi der. Jab takk tum aaram kar rahi ho main sab ko inform kardunga ki badbadh devi shuru ho gayi hai," added Virat jestly trying not to laugh out loud at the adorable pout that formed on her beautiful face. 

He fed Sai medicines and waited with a heavy heart till she fell asleep. The moment Sai slept, Virat left the room at flash's speed to find Pulkit. He found Pulkit consulting the surgeons who had operated on Sai. Virat immediately went to them and informed them of the occurrence with Sai and their conversation. Pulkit's heart was sinking hearing Virat. He was hoping and praying that he should be proven wrong. The doctors decided to do their final testing once Sai was awake.

3 hours later as Sai woke up from her deep slumber, she saw the familiar faces of the doctors around her. The doctors conversed with her trying to gauge her memory. Pulkit who was there along with the doctors had a stream of tears flowing down his face. After what seemed like an eternity, the doctors exited the room allowing Sai to rest.

What came next slipped the ground from underneath the Chavan family's feet and shook Virat to his core.

"Mr Virat Chavan, ek buri khabar hai. Sai ke case mein waise toh physically and internally koi complications nahi hai and she is on her way to recovery jaise ke hum aap sabko pahele bhi bata chuke hai. BUT because of the impact of the accident aur Sai's mental trauma, it seems that Sai is experiencing partial amnesia. Sai ko pichle ek saal ki koi baat nahi yaad hai. Last use apni suicide attempt tak hi yaad hai. Badi mushkil se humne unhe unke accident ka reality samjhaya hai aur baaki shayad aap log unhe dheere dheere bata sakte hai. Par iss baat ka bahut dhyaan rakhe ki jis baat se unhe stress ho sakti hai uss baat se unhe bahut dur rakhe. Ek galat move aur unke maansik santulan pe bahut gahera asar padh sakta hai. Toh please aage unse kya baat karni hai, kya batana hai aap sab zara khud mein baatein kar le toh bahetar hoga. In fact, hum to suggest karenge ki Sai ko ek ache se pychiatrist ke saath counselling karwayiye taaki woh iss confused aur muddled up state mein akela na feel kare. Aur ek baat unki physical recovery kaafi achi ho rahi hai. Iss hisab se hum unhe agle hafte end takk discharge de sakte hai. Be mindful ki unka brain surgery huwa aur aise state mein jab patients apne hairless form ko dekhte hai toh unhe kaafi jhatka bhi lagta hai toh in sab cheezo ka khaas dhyaan rakhiyega. Baaki aap Dr Pulkit se consult kar lijiye. Maine unhe Sai ke case ke baare mein sab kuch samjha diya hai. Chalti hu. Take care."

Dr Monami's words were echoing in the corridor. Virat felt his entire world get destroyed in seconds. The room was spinning around him and he did not know how to react. He did not know how to process that his Sai did not remember him as her husband. She did not remember their marriage, aai or anyone else from the Chavan family for that matter. He was crushed. Suddenly all the energy drained from his body and he collapsed on the nearby chair not sure what to think or do next. Pulkit who was observing this walked up to him and put a hand on his shoulder and tried consoling him.

"Shaant ho jao Virat. Agar tum aise toot jaoge toh Kaku aur baaki gharwaalo ko kaun sambhalega."

"Pulkit, yeh sab kaise hogaya? Meri Sai ko humare saare pal yaad hi nahi. Woh toh humari shaadi tak bhul chuki hai. Main usse kya kahu? Main kaise yaad dilaau humara yeh ek saal usko?" weeped dejected Virat.

"Kyun Virat? Kyun itna fark padh raha hai tumhe? Infact tumhe toh khush ho jana chahiye, Yeh toh acha mauka hai tumhare liye ki tum Sai se humesha ke liye chutkara pa sakte ho. Chordo usse hostel mein and get back on with your life. Aur waise bhi kya yaad karana chahte ho tum Sai ko? Kaise tumne uski aur Usha maushi ki beizatti kar ke unhe aadhi raat ko ghar se nikaal diya tha? Ya phir kaise din-raat tumhare gharwaale Sai ke upar taano a bhauchaar karte the? Ya phir shayad tum usse apne aur Patralekha ka pyar yaad dilana chahte ho? Areh nahi nahi... main toh bhul higaya tha, shayad tum use yaad dilana chahte ho ki kaise tumne uske character par ungli uthayi jiski wajah se woh hospital pahuch gayi thi. Aur bhi yaadein hai ginwau?" replied Pulkit scoffingly, not missing a single chance to taunt Virat. 

"bas karo Pulkit. Ab aur nahi bardaasht hota mujhse. Main apni harkato par sharminda hu. Main jaanta hu ki maine bahut galtiya ki hai par...

"Par kya Virat? Virat, jo tumne kya hai use galti nahi kahete kyunki tumne har baar galti ki, uske baad gidgidaye Sai ke saamne aur maafi bhi maangi. Lekin thode hi din baad purane galti se bhi badi galti karte ho. Tumhara yeh cycle kabhi khatam hi nahi hota. Aur tumhari zindagi ka sabse bada sach yeh hai ki tum Sai se apna bartao apni convenience ke hisaab se karte ho. Tum khush ho usse toh pyar jatate ho, par agar gussa ho toh, use nicha dikhane ka mauka nahi chodhte. Aur sone pe suhaaga waali baat toh yeh hai ki Sai toh jaise ek shuttlecock hai, jisse tum, tumhari Pakhi aur gharwaale idhar se udhar jab chaho jaise chaho udhate rahete hai. Yeh hai Sai ki ek saal ki hakikat Virat Chavan aur tum yeh yaad dilana chahte ho Sai ko? Waah! Virat, maine tumpe tumhara jija hone ka hakk kabhi nahi jataya par us rishte ke naam par aaj tumse kuch maangna chahta hu. Please Sai ko azaad kardo iss bandhan se. Yeh ek bahut acha mauka hai uss bachi ke paas ki apni zindagi bilkul waise shuru kare aur jiye jiski woh hakdaar hai. Meri iss baat pe gaur karna, ek baar," sighed Pulkit and walked away with a heavy heart.
