A Woman At The Golden Threshold
~*~
When I was slammed with guilt,
Their misogyny barks at me like a feral beast,
As if, they believe, they know everything…to say the least.
The superiority of the man is an overbearing tide,
While my words are just unfamiliar grains of sand.
Because I am a woman?
Respect me.
Don’t expect me to accept your demands and reprimands!
To enjoy your stare and your leer, and then
Your curses for staying still for centuries!
I was too young to understand where I stand,
It seems that there is a shockingly fallacious expectation,
From me, my duties, my purpose of life
No one asked me for my consent!
All of a sudden, everyone there, with erroneous assumptions!
Not yours to assess & publicly judge!
Respect me and my separate entity, beyond your judgment.
Don’t expect me to take it as a compliment!
Man... It is harassment, it is an assault.
It is YOURS, and NEVER my fault!
It is a power play. It is oppression.
Furthermore, it is treating me like I am a possession.
It is threatening. It is disrespectful.
It is entirely neglectful,
The fact that I am much more than ‘a nice rack’
Listen and hear, this isn’t a request or a plea,
It’s a demand, from me
To Respect me even when I am a rock.

A poem that can untangle so many affirmative questions into words of tenacity

From Sita, Shakuntala, Satyavathi, Draupadi and Amba, all these women from Epics, were neglected, abducted, punished and thrown out of their kingdom without any fault of their own! All the mighty royals and male egoists, did a great harm to every woman in the Epics. A well written poem with many unanswered questions, with assertiveness, you put in front of your readers Madi.

From the time of the epics to contemporary times, the anguish and fettered cries for respect are universal. Time for contemplation and introspection that nothing much has changed down the ages! Deeply emotive and pertinent, your poem seeks questions that resonate even in modern times!A heart wrenching, profound poem with immense stylistic and creative values, well done!!
