The Bamboo And The Birth Of The Flute

The afternoon sun gradually softened into the golden hues of evening. Drawn by the gentle murmur of the Yamuna, Radha and Krishna wandered towards the riverbank. Tall bamboo groves swayed gracefully in the breeze, their whispering leaves blending with the songs of birds returning to their nests.

They sat beneath the shade of a kadamba tree, watching the rippling waters reflect the changing colours of the sky. Nearby, a peacock danced with joyous abandon at the sight of gathering rain clouds, its iridescent feathers shimmering like fragments of a rainbow.

Smiling, Radha plucked one of the fallen feathers and lovingly tucked it into Krishna's dark curls.

"It belongs here," she said softly.

The feather seemed to find its rightful place upon his head, as though it had waited all its life for that moment.

Just then, the peacock pecked at a tender bamboo stem before flying away into the forest. The slender reed, pierced with tiny holes, fell gently upon the grass.

Radha picked it up and examined it thoughtfully before placing it in Krishna's hands.

He looked at it with innocent concern.

"Radha," he asked, gently tracing the little openings with his fingers, "who hurt this tender bamboo? Why does it bear so many wounds?"

She looked at him with quiet affection.

"Perhaps it has been waiting for you, Krishna. Give it the comfort you always give every aching heart. Touch its wounds with your lips and soothe its pain."

Holding the bamboo with great tenderness, Krishna slowly lifted it to his lips, as though consoling a sorrowful friend.

The moment his breath flowed through its hollow heart, a miracle unfolded.

The wounds did not cry.

They sang.

A melody, delicate and unearthly, emerged from the tiny openings, floating gently across the Yamuna. The breeze carried it through the forests, where trees stood motionless, birds fell silent, and even the flowing river seemed to pause, listening in reverence.

What had once been empty wounds became windows through which eternity poured its music.

Radha closed her eyes.

The melody did not merely enter her ears; it flowed into her soul.

With folded hands she whispered,

"Krishna... this bamboo had silently endured every wound, waiting only for the touch of your lips. Today its suffering has become the music of the universe."

Krishna lowered the flute and looked at her with innocent curiosity.

"Radha, tell me... is this the cry of the bamboo, the whisper of a lover, or the song of the wind? What is it that sings?"

Radha smiled, her eyes glistening with quiet devotion.

"It is none of them, Krishna... and yet it is all of them."

She gently held the flute in her hands.

"The bamboo sings because it has become completely empty within. It kept nothing for itself. Your breath found no obstacle in its hollow heart, and so it became your voice."

She looked into his eyes.

"Remember this, my beloved Krishna. Hearts filled with pride can never become flutes. Only those emptied of ego can carry the music of the Divine."

Krishna listened silently.

The evening breeze stirred once again.

Radha continued,

"The wounds upon this bamboo are no longer marks of suffering. They have become sacred openings through which your love flows into the world. Such is the mystery of divine grace—pain, when surrendered to God, transforms into eternal beauty."

A gentle smile spread across Krishna's face.

Without another word, he lifted the flute once more.

This time he stood in the graceful Tribhanga posture, one foot lightly crossed before the other, his slender body curved with effortless elegance like a flowering vine swaying in the breeze.

The peacock feather trembled upon his crown.

His fingers rested lightly upon the flute.

Then came the first note.

It floated over the waters of the Yamuna like moonlight transformed into sound.

Another note followed.

Then another.

Each carried the fragrance of blossoming love.

The forests awakened.

Peacocks spread their feathers in delight.

Deer emerged from the woods without fear.

Cows lifted their heads from grazing and slowly gathered around him.

Birds forgot their songs, choosing instead to listen.

The breeze itself began to dance.

Drawn by the irresistible melody, the maidens of Vrindavan left their homes and hurried towards the riverbank, their hearts responding to a call deeper than sound.

Krishna did not summon them.

Love did !!

As the moon smiles upon its own reflection in a tranquil lake, so Krishna smiled within the hearts of every soul that beheld him.

The melody flowed with the sweetness and tenderness of Raga Madhuvanti, carrying the fragrance of Sringara Rasa...not merely the love between two hearts, but the eternal yearning of every soul for its Divine Beloved.

The Yamuna herself became the chorus, her dancing waves keeping rhythm upon the shore.

The stars appeared one by one, as though gathering to witness the celestial concert.

In that sacred night, prayer blossomed into music, music blossomed into love, and love dissolved into the Infinite rhythm.

For those who stood upon the banks of the Yamuna, it was no longer Krishna who played the flute.

It was the universe breathing through Him.
