Yo. Mr. DJ: Because Student Life is the Life!

Here are 5 of our favourite songs celebrating this particular phase of your student life.

The month of September heralds the start of a brand new year of college and university for those young ones still in their schooling years. No one would deny that college days are some of the best days of our lives, full of zeal and excitement. A new life begins after graduation, with exciting opportunities and the wonders of the world to explore as one heads towards their goal. These are the days when you smile because you can, laugh till you cry, and cry till your friends make you laugh once again. A different life, with all sorts of experiences, from crushes to falling in love, to crushes on your teachers, group chats and projects, bunking classes with your friends - the list is endless! Nostalgia will always be at its finest when you think back on your college days.

Considering all of this, BollyCurry has brought to you a special edition of Yo Mr DJ as college students ready themselves for classes, younger students wish they were starting college already, and the rest of us wishing we were back at college! Here are 5 of our favourite songs celebrating this particular phase of your student life.

"Pehla Nasha" - Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander
'Chaahe tum kuchh na kaho, maine sunn liya,
Ki saathi pyaar ka, mujhe chun liya.
Chun liya, maine sunn liya.'

This song perfectly encapsulates the mushiness of your first college love. Butterflies in your stomach, routine and constant day-dreaming, alongside all these new feelings fluttering about, you catch yourself humming your current favourite love song! The evergreen love song from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander is possibly one of the most played songs whenever one thinks of romantic numbers. Sung by the amazing Sadhana Sargam and Udit Narayan, this soft romantic song could never be missed when considering songs about college life.

We have all had a crush, or seriously fallen in love. Those of you just starting your college journey have possibly even dreamed of such a thing. Even now, as you hum the song in your head, you are thinking of someone. So who would you like to dedicate this song to? Share with us!

"Ratta Maar" - Student Of The Year
'Ratta maar, ratta maar, o patak patak ke sar gira de,
knowledge ki deewar, ratta maar, ratta maar... ratta maar...'

Student Of The Year is not the first college based film by ace filmmaker Karan Johar, but is definitely the most recent. Most of the songs in the movie were centred on various student-life situations, and selecting just one song was very difficult. This particular song, however, depicts the tough times student may have when studying and preparing for examinations. The lyrics are meaningful in invoking the memories of hair-pulling frustration and stress as students struggle to understand the concepts given in their textbooks. The confused mind of the student is captured perfectly, as are the various tricks they learn to apply when studying subjects they dislike and are not strong in. An enjoyable song with a foot-tapping beat, it is definitely on our playlist. Is it on yours?

"Kabhi Kabhi Aditi" - Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Naa
'Kabhi kabhi zindagi mein yuhi koi apna lagta hai,
Kabhi kabhi Aditi woh bichad jaaye toh ek sapna lagta hai.'

While this song from the highly acclaimed Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Naa is not exactly pictured on college itself, it is based on the bonds of friendship created during college years. And so BollyCurry figured it deserved a spot on the playlist. Sung by Rashid Ali, it became a chartbuster all over as it showcased just how friends can and will cheer you up when you are at your lowest, and the lengths they will go to in order to make you smile. Friendship is an important part of our lives, and it is usually during the college phase of our life that we actually learn what friendship truly is. True friends are made in tough times, and we cherish them for a lifetime.

Have you ever tried cheering your friend up, and succeeded in making them smile? Do you remember that feeling of pride at helping your friend climb back out of those dumps? We are sure you do! This song captures the happiness and quirkiness in friendship, with a lively score and entertaining scenes that make us smile and remember our own particular friends. Which friends would you sing this song for?

"Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha" - Main Hoon Naa
'Tumhe jo maine dekha, tumhe jo maine jaana,
Jo hosh tha, woh toh gaya.'

A student falling for, or crushing on, their teacher is a situation that I am sure most of us have been in or heard of, and this song from the Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen starrer Main Hoon Naa circles around that very plot. The whole world stops around the student as they dream of flirting and singing a romantic number with and to their crush. Everything goes dreamy. There are musicians in the background. Dancers appear out of thin air, violins play music whenever their crush appear. All sorts of fantasies take place in those few moments as a smart and charming teacher walks by, and your heart goes dhak dhak. The feeling drives you crazy, and Shreya Ghoshal and Abhijeet Bhattacharya's mesmerising vocals further  emphasise that feeling. This song was at the top of the lists when it came out, and no wonder!

Other songs from the movie also fulfil the criteria to be on the playlist, and perhaps they may be on your personal playlists! Are 'Chale Jaise Hawaaein' or 'Main Hoon Naa' or any other numbers on your lists? Let us know!

"Give Me Some Sunshine" - 3 Idiots
'Give me some sunshine, give me some rain,
Give me another chance, I wanna grow up once again.'

Last but not the least on our playlist is perhaps one of the best songs out of Bollywood for a student. A song that can make you cry if you listen carefully, with meaningful lyrics that showcase the stress and pressure a student can undergo. The song, and the movie it is from, depict the bitter reality of the Engineering and Medical Colleges in India, and even around the world, where strict teachers and principals sometimes create difficult situations for students, and parents range from overly-concerned to overly-unconcerned. It showcases how students want to grow up again, in a less stressful environment, and where they are allowed to make their own choices rather than live out the choices of their elders. The song gave us all a lesson of a lifetime, and opened our eyes to the fact that we all deserve to follow our dreams and find our own happiness. After all, college life is the best life!

Of course, there are many more songs that showcase the different situations, but these are the few we have narrowed down are. But do let us know - Which of these songs are on your playlist Which ones are your favourites? And which songs would you like to dedicate to your buddies? Let us know in the comments below!
