Model turned actor Amal Sehrawat, currently seen in Star Plus show 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai' believes that theater is the best training ground for actors during their formative years. Having gained fame and success through this show, Amal aka Sangram sheds some light about his journey and aspirations from the acting industry.
Amal, you have done theater prior to television. How has that boosted your acting skills?
Theater is an actor's medium. It is old school but it strengthens and clears actor's basics in terms of acting, character study and discipline. Talking about Cinema, this is a director's medium, which is advanced and controlled.
Apart from above mentioned points, it teaches you camera facing, how to catch light , consistency in expressions and dialogues in between cuts and retakes where an actor has to maintain the same graph. Most importantly films, are mostly shot in a non- linear way. That means, sometimes climax will be shot first and opening shot at last. It is pivotal for an actor to know the entire graph and perform accordingly. Strong Basics learnt from theater helps you grasp these advancements easily.
According to you, why is theater important for an actor?
As I said earlier, theater strengthens an actor's basics and prepares him for the next level. But both mediums are very different.
You have put in a lot of hard-work to make it big on television and films both. Which medium do you enjoy more?
Look, both mediums have its pros and cons. A film is shot with lots of preparation and limited scenes are shot in a day across locations, whereas TV has pressure of early telecast so, its shot in a hurry. But nowadays the quality is equal on both mediums.
As an aspiring actor, television is a perfect medium to connect with the household audience and get an instant exposure.
You took up a Bollywood movie, Satya 2 and then chose to entertain the television audience via the small-screen. Parallel to that, you are now gearing up for a Bollywood release. Why the constant switching?
I am not switching. I am just exploring good opportunities and taking up all the positive work coming my way irrespective of the medium. Today the line between films and television has diminished.
Which medium excites you more?
To be frank, the role and character excites me. Not the medium.
A message to aspirants...
I see lot of aspirants mainly concentrating on looks, physique, figure; PR, auditions and most of them neglect to work on their acting skills. I would like to tell all the aspirants that acting is a constant learning process. Doing an acting course, serial or film is not enough. I believe every actor shall watch minimum one film in a day to explore world cinema.
Good-luck Amal!
