Fans of Indian television's most iconic family drama Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi have reason to rejoice as talks about its much-awaited sequel continue to gather momentum. The buzz around Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 has gone viral, especially after reports surfaced that original lead stars Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay may reprise their roles as Tulsi and Mihir Virani.
While there has been no official confirmation from Smriti or Amar, hints have been dropped. Ekta Kapoor, the producer of the original series, had earlier teased fans by hinting that a “politician” might be joining the reboot. This led many to believe she was referring to Smriti Irani, who is now a prominent political figure. Amar Upadhyay, who played Mihir, is also expected to return, though no statements have been made yet.
Adding to the excitement, actor Sumeet Sachdev, who played Tulsi and Mihir’s son Gautam Virani (affectionately known as Gomsy), recently confirmed that he is in talks to join the sequel. Speaking exclusively to India Forums, Sumeet revealed, “They’ve approached me twice actually. I got a second call a few weeks after it didn’t work out the first time.” Although discussions are ongoing, fans are hopeful to see him once again as part of the Virani family.

Originally aired on Star Plus in 2000, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi changed the face of Indian television. Created by Ekta Kapoor under her banner Balaji Telefilms, the show became a cultural landmark. Smriti Irani’s portrayal of Tulsi Virani—an ideal daughter-in-law navigating complex family politics—made her a household name. The show focused on the lives, struggles, and emotional journeys within a wealthy Gujarati joint family.
Though remembered for its dramatic storytelling and iconic saas-bahu confrontations, the show also addressed serious social issues such as widow remarriage, inheritance laws, and the evolving roles of women in traditional households. Over its eight-year run, it not only defined the genre of family dramas but also influenced a generation of viewers and future television shows.
With the second season reportedly in development, excitement is building. If Smriti Irani, Amar Upadhyay, and Sumeet Sachdev return, it will be a nostalgic treat for fans. As preparations continue, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 promises to bring back the magic of the original show while offering a fresh take for today’s audience.
