Sonu Nigam In Trouble Over Remarks On Kannada Song Request And Pahalgam Attack

Singer Sonu Nigam faces controversy following a police complaint filed by a pro-Kannada group. The complaint alleges that Nigam's comments, made during an event, offended the Kannadiga community. The President of the Bengaluru city district unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) claims Nigam compared a fan's request for a Kannada song to a terrorist attack, potentially fueling linguistic discord.

The event took place at a musical concert last month at East Point College of Engineering and Technology, Virgonagar, Bengaluru. A video from the concert shows Nigam's reaction to a fan's request. In the clip, the singer is seen reacting to a fan who had requested a Kannada song.

Although the singer stated at the concert that he respected Kannadigas and the Kannada language, his comparison of the fan's actions to the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack caused controversy.

The complaint submitted by KRV stated, “Sonu Nigam’s statements have caused severe distress to the Kannadiga community. By equating a simple cultural request to sing a Kannada song with a terrorist act, Shri Nigam has portrayed Kannadigas as intolerant or violent, which is contrary to their peace-loving and harmonious nature."

The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, primarily tourists. This event has led to widespread condemnation and increased concerns about cross-border terrorism.

The situation has escalated, with demands for an apology from the singer, despite no legal action beyond the initial complaint.
