"Some won't object their daughters in certain clothes but will if their daughter-in-laws do" - Kanikka Kapur

Known for her role in Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2, Kanikka Kapur made her big-screen debut with Dono a week ago. Being in a Barjatya world is always a dream in several ways, but these films have always been marked several times for their portrayal of women or certain norms.

In Dono, the actor is a part of a track where her further in-laws object to the clothes she is wearing. In an exclusive conversation with us, we asked her about this and also if she has faced things in real life that have rubbed her off the wrong way. 

Q. With your character, I think there is a graph in this film as well, where, you know, the person you're getting married to, their families, you know, they have problems with the kind of dresses you're wearing. So is it something that, you know, you feel that it was, you know, it's in the world of Barjatiyas? What do you feel about that? Like, you know, do you feel is this still a very orthodox, you know, mindset that people deal with, or is this just a part and parcel of a little bit thing?

Okay, so I feel like it depends on, from person to person, but there are people who maybe; you know, if they have a problem with the kind of clothes that you wear, maybe someone will not have a problem with their own daughters are wearing such clothes, but maybe will if their daughters-in-law do. Do you get it? That little shift is still prevalent in a lot of places, and I've noticed that. I mean, when someone gets married, then suddenly, why is the girl sometimes asked to, you know, leave her career, especially if her career says acting, then I'm sure a lot of families won't, maybe not be comfortable with that career, versus if they're a guy and they're into acting, nobody tells you to leave your profession. So there is still that little shift, so, of course, the world has become modern, but there are a few things that are very unsaid, like the little difference between daughter and daughter-in-law. So those things are still there. So, it is traditional; the film still has that traditional element in a way, but it talks about issues that are still relevant today.

People sometimes don't understand that I'm actually serious about my own career, which was like, I mean, why is that?

Q. Have you experienced any such thing? Is there a specific instance that you remember that you know, sort of, that rubbed you the wrong way?

A lot of such kind of incidents have happened, but luckily I haven't taken any to heart, because if I had started thinking about it and it would have been a mess, then I would have... But so many times, I mean, even in outfits, but sometimes, you know, like, especially a girl who is acting and now, like, in the beginning, people used to tell me that, when they used to meet me. They used to think that it was my hobby to, you know, model or to act. And they would ask me, what do you do? And I was like, I'm an actor. And they're like, oh, like a full-time... That's your profession, yeah. People sometimes don't understand that I'm actually serious about my own career, which was like, I mean, why is that?
