Actor Shama Sikander, a familiar face on Indian television and OTT platforms, recently opened up about one of the most turbulent periods of her life during a heartfelt conversation on Debina Bonnerjee’s podcast. Best known for her breakout role in the hit TV show Yeh Meri Life Hai, Shama has also appeared in popular series like Baali Umar Ko Salaam, Seven, and Maaya, as well as Bollywood projects such as Bypass Road and Mann. However, behind the glitz and glamour of her public persona lay years of struggle with mental health, which she candidly shared in this emotional interview.

Shama revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was battling deep-seated depression for years. “I had bipolar disorder,” she said. “I was very snappy. These were suppressed emotions that had never been properly dealt with. Depression felt like a strange comfort zone at the time — it was this dark world I had created to protect myself.” Her words painted a vivid picture of someone who felt numb and disconnected, even though she had achieved significant milestones professionally.

The actor also spoke about feeling disenchanted with the entertainment industry during that period. “I was very depressed,” she continued. “I didn’t like the industry. I felt everyone was too self-centered and selfish.” The emotional exhaustion of navigating these pressures left her isolated and in deep pain.

At her lowest point, Shama revealed that she attempted to take her own life by overdosing on sleeping pills. This incident led to her hospitalization, where she recalled the trauma of waking up to find her hands tied to the bed, surrounded by medical staff. “I thought I was in heaven at first,” she said. “But then I realized they were restraining me because I was violent and they had to pump the poison out of my system.” The experience was life-altering, forcing her to confront her reality and the need for professional help.

Following her hospitalization, Shama took her first steps toward recovery. Therapy introduced her to the concept of mental illness as something that could be treated — an idea she hadn’t been aware of before. “That was the turning point,” she explained. “I learned about my bipolar disorder and understood that my suppressed anger and sadness could be healed with the right guidance.” Over time, therapy and self-reflection enabled her to rebuild her life with a more stable mindset.
