The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has decided to digitally restore Satyajit Ray's classic, 'Kanchenjungha', the filmmaker's first color movie. The original negative of the film had been damaged beyond repair.

KOLKATA, April 23 (SAMPURN): The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has decided to digitally restore Satyajit Ray’s classic, ‘Kanchenjungha’, the filmmaker’s first color movie. The original negative of the film had been damaged beyond repair.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker’s son Sandip Ray said, "The academy will have to do with the copy of the master negative of the 1962 film as the original was destroyed due to mishandling." He added, "The process is likely to take several months as they are looking for the best available technology that is fast changing."

Sandip Ray, himself a filmmaker of repute, said the master negative of the film was damaged as the canned stock was kept exposed to the sun and rain on the roof of a film laboratory in Mumbai.
