It's been a tough few days for India at the 2024 Paris Olympics with Vinesh Phogat facing a disqualification from her gold medal match due to being overweight for her 50kg wrestling bout. It's sad news for sure, seeing such a talented wrestler encounter this setback.
Following the news, numerous celebrities extended their support to Vinesh, showing solidarity during this challenging time for the star athlete.
It's truly disheartening for both Vinesh's fans and wrestling enthusiasts to learn that the Olympian has chosen to retire from her wrestling career following the disqualification incident.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu echoed the sentiments of the nation by resharing a post about Vinesh's retirement. The emotions were indescribable as Sam expressed her feelings with a heartbreak emoji, capturing the collective sentiment of a billion Indians.
According to the PTI (Press Trust of India), Vinesh Phogat has retired from the sport. In her retirement message, the athlete stated, “Ma(mother), wrestling has won, I have lost. Please forgive me, your dreams, and my courage, everything is broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I shall be indebted to you all. Forgive me.”
Following a stellar performance at the 2024 Olympics, triumphing over numerous world champions, Vinesh was on the brink of making history for herself, her family, and India. Yet, fate took an unexpected turn when she exceeded the weight limit by just 100 grams during the weigh-in, shattering her dreams at the last moment.
As per reports, Vinesh made every effort to shed the 100 grams, resulting in dehydration that necessitated her hospitalization. Regrettably, despite her attempts, she couldn't meet the target in time, resulting in her disqualification from the 50kg women's wrestling gold medal match.
Following this, there have been several protests from the wrestling community and also from fellow netizens who have questioned the Olympic committee’s decision. The common talking point is why is Vinesh not deserving of a silver medal when she has made it to the final? Is it fair that an athlete who has reached the final, walks away with no medal?
