A 27-year-old man from New Jersey has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a violent attack on renowned author Salman Rushdie during a public event in New York. The assailant, Hadi Matar, was convicted earlier this year on charges of attempted murder and assault related to the August 2022 incident.

The sentencing took place on Friday in Chautauqua County, New York, following a trial that lasted two weeks. Matar also received a separate seven-year sentence for injuring Henry Reese, who was present on stage during the incident. The court ruled that both sentences would run concurrently.

Rushdie, who was speaking at a cultural forum at the time of the attack, sustained multiple injuries. He underwent extensive medical treatment and has since chronicled his experiences in a memoir. The author did not attend the sentencing proceedings.

Before the court delivered its decision, Matar made a personal statement, addressing his views on public discourse and the responsibilities that come with free expression. His remarks included criticisms of Rushdie, though he did not express regret for his actions.

The prosecution described the attack as deliberate and calculated, emphasizing the severity of injuries caused. According to courtroom testimony, Rushdie was struck numerous times in rapid succession. Witnesses recounted a chaotic scene as audience members attempted to intervene.

Rushdie later testified during the trial, providing a detailed account of the assault. His testimony formed a key part of the prosecution’s case. Matar declined to take the stand in his own defense.

The incident drew international attention due to Rushdie’s longstanding profile as a literary figure and past controversies surrounding his work. Security at public literary events has since come under renewed scrutiny, with organizers reviewing protocols for protecting speakers.

Matar, who has remained in custody since his arrest, will also serve an additional three-year post-release supervision period following his prison term for the assault on Reese. Legal observers noted that the court imposed the maximum sentence permitted under the law for the attempted murder charge.
