Sahara Group founder and Chairman Subrata Roy passed away at a Mumbai hospital yesterday after struggling with a prolonged illness, the company mentioned in a statement. He was 75 years old.

Roy is survived by their wife, Swapna Roy, and two sons, Sushanto Roy and Seemanto Roy, who live abroad. The statement read, 

'It is with profound sadness that Sahara India Pariwar informs the demise of our Hon’ble ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara, Managing Worker and Chairman, Sahara India Pariwar. 

Saharasri ji, an inspirational leader and visionary, passed away on 14th November 2023 at 10.30 pm due to cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on 12th November 2023 following a decline in health.

His loss will be deeply felt by the entire Sahara India Pariwar. Saharasri ji was a guiding force, a mentor, and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to work alongside him. 

Details regarding the last rites will be communicated in due course.

Talking about him further, Roy was born in Bihar's Araria in 1948, Subrata Roy's success story of starting Sahara India Pariwar began in 1978. Starting with a capital of only two thousand rupees, the company has traversed a long way to become a frontrunner in entrepreneurship, Sahara says on its website.

Roy also bought a now-defunct IPL team, Pune Warriors India, back in 2010 but withdrew from the tournament in 2013 over financial differences with the BCCI stemming from the valuation of the league's annual franchise fee.

However, Sahara faced a multitude of problems over funds in a case that has now come to be known as the "Sahara chit fund scam".

The statement also read said Subrata Roy died of a cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.
