After bringing a hard-hitting story with Kaafir, Zee5 is now creating abuzz with it’s latest release, Bombers. The series is a football drama based in the city of Chandannagar where the French first introduced football in India. The series stars ace actors like Anup Soni, Ranveer Shorey and Zakir Hussain along with young faces like Varun Mitra, Prince Narula, Meiyang Chang among others.
Introduction
The story revolves around an age old football club named Bombers FC, which loses its majority of players in a road accident. Post the accident, the team disintegrates with Badol Roy (Varun Mitra) being the only surviving player of the team. Inspite of the team’s disintegration, the football club and its beloved homeground still holds value for Chandannagar community. But all hell breaks loose when a corrupt politician Manik (Anup Soni) plots evil plan of confiscating the football ground to construct a commercial mall for profits.
Now it is upto the likes of Badol Roy, the sole surviving player, Somu Da (Zakir Hussain) who is the owner of the football club and the ground, Debu (Ranvir Shorey) to save the club and the ground from the clutches of Manik.
In doing so, they are required to assemble a new team that will help save the club and the ground.
What we liked
The beginning was as great as any interesting football match with unexpected incidents shocking the audience in the first two minutes of the pilot episode.
The title track is no less than a football anthem giving you the nostalgic vibes of “This time for Africa” by Shakira and “Waving Flags” by K’naan.
It is refreshing to see Anup Soni in a negative character after the stereotyped monotonous role of Crime Patrol that we have been watching since ages.
What we did not like
The story started with a bang, but failed to keep the same pace due to plots being shifted to and fro from flashbacks to present times. While the second episode seemed pretty decent with individual character building leading to the initiation of the new team’s formation.
Verdict
Overall it is a good watch with inclusion of the world wide popular sport which is still evolving in India. But we hope to see the storyline picking up the required pace in the coming episodes.
