Nostalgia for the 90s seems to be the trend as daily soaps have time and again gone back to what can be described as sweet memories of the past decade. The popularity can be seen on Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai which has a huge fan-following as the Ashi Singh and Randeep Rai starer remains a favourite. Turns out this trend would translate to the web space as well.
Yeh Meri Family is an upcoming TVF series that revolves around a middle class family and follows the characters around the typical ups and downs they experience. The trailer opens in the summer of 1998 and introduces us to the first glimpse of the characters' lives. It shows us the many problems children in a family face and their consolations as well. Here's what we think of the trailer and its impact-
The Good
We really like how the trailer already gives us an idea of family members dealing with some real and relatable problems like favouritism, rebellion and run-ins between siblings. It has an emotional touch. Although the trailer does reveal a budding puppy-love story, it keeps the family element at the centre thus, justifying the title. We also loved watching Mona Jaswir Singh looking pretty convincing in her character. She had an endearing role in Alt Balaji's Kehne Ko Humsafar Hai recently so her record on the digital space looks good. All-in-all, we rate this trailer high on its realistic feel.
The Bad
We have recently seen a 90s teen love story set in school on Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai and we don't know if this repetition in theme will work out for the series. Another concern we had was the represention of violence in the home as corporal punishment is considered pretty normal in India, especially in the yesteryear (the kids talk about being beaten up by their parents). We wonder how the series plans on exposing these problems and whether the makers will be able to portray sensitive matters of this kind.
The Verdict
The trailer gives us a good first look into the show and it does egg on the viewer to check out the first episode. We wouldn't recommend judging it as another Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai just yet. This series deserves a chance for its willingness to represent matters closer to home. It also has the humour needed to swallow content that might get too heavy. We definitely think you should give this a try for 90s nostalgia as well the novel elements it promises.
