On Friday, 28th April, Mani Ratnam's period drama film 'Ponniyin Selvan: 2 was released in theatres and went in for a good start. According to a report on Sacnilk, the highly anticipated Tamil film, "Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two" collected ₹25 crore in Tamil Nadu, which is a significant decrease compared to its predecessor that collected ₹40 crore on its opening day. However, the film managed to collect ₹3-4 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and ₹4-5 crore in Karnataka. The first part of the film series grossed a total of Rs. 327 crores in India and over Rs. 169 crores ($20.70 million) worldwide.

The two-part film features some of the biggest names in the Indian entertainment industry, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, Parthiban, and Vikram Prabhu. The film is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novels and portrays the early days of the Chola empire.

In a recent interview, Vikram attributed the success of regional films to subtitles, stating that "people, after the pandemic, are open to watching subtitle films." He emphasized that good content is the key to success, regardless of whether it is a pan-India or regional film. "Karnan," a small film that was immersed in culture, has been widely celebrated because of its powerful story, Vikram added.

The film's cast and crew expressed their gratitude towards their fans for their support and appreciation, with Aishwarya thanking director Mani Ratnam for his guidance and leadership.

"Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two" has received positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike, with many praising the film's visual grandeur, performances, and storytelling. The film's success highlights the growing trend of regional cinema in India.
