In a proud moment for Indian cinema, Payal Kapadia’s film All We Imagine As Light received a nomination at the 2025 BAFTA Awards. Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, the film was recognized in the Best Film Not in the English Language category but ultimately lost to the Spanish-language French crime-musical Emilia Pérez. Set in the vibrant backdrop of Mumbai, the story revolves around Nurse Prabha, whose life is turned upside down by an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, while her roommate Anu tries to maintain her relationship amidst the city's chaos. The film also faced disappointment at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. As anticipated, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez took home the award at the 78th BAFTA Awards, with Audiard's acceptance speech drawing significant attention.
Amid the controversy regarding actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s past offensive tweets, Audiard took a moment to acknowledge her in his speech. As reported by Variety, he expressed his gratitude towards Gascón, who was absent from the ceremony and has since stepped back from the awards campaign.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Mexico, Jacques Audiard's film Emilia Pérez explores the lives of four extraordinary women, each pursuing their own version of happiness. The storyline follows cartel leader Emilia (Gascón), who seeks the assistance of Rita (Saldana), an underappreciated lawyer, to help her stage her own death. This daring plan allows Emilia to break free from her former life and finally live as her true self.
Earlier this year, Emilia Pérez clinched the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language, surpassing films like All We Imagine…, The Girl With the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Vermiglio.
Director Rich Peppiatt was honored with a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his film Kneecap. Peppiatt, who also penned the screenplay, explores the journey of Kneecap, an Irish hip-hop trio from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
