Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a towering figure of Indian parallel cinema, passed away on December 23 at the age of 90 after battling chronic kidney disease. The news was confirmed by his daughter, Pia Benegal, on Monday evening.
The last rites will be conducted on December 24 at Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium in Mumbai. Sharing the funeral details, actress Shabana Azmi, who debuted with Benegal’s Ankur, posted on Instagram Stories. A statement from Benegal’s children, Nira and Pia, revealed the ceremony will begin at 2 PM.

Benegal, who celebrated his 90th birthday recently with family and friends, is remembered for his impactful contribution to Indian cinema. A pioneer of realism, he spearheaded the Indian parallel cinema movement with films such as Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977), Junoon (1978), Arohan (1982), and Well Done Abba (2010). His illustrious career earned him multiple National Film Awards, cementing his legacy as a master storyteller.
