Comedian and entertainer Munawar Faruqui recently opened up about what Eid means to him and how the festival holds a special place in his heart. Now settled in Mumbai, Munawar cherishes Eid not only as a religious occasion but as a time for family bonding, sharing joy, and giving back.
Talking to Times of India Munawar shared that one of his fondest memories was collecting Eidi—money gifted by elders to children. As a child, he and his friends would look forward to visiting relatives, each hoping to gather Rs 100-120 by the end of the day. Munawar laughed as he remembered the uncle who would give the prized Rs 10 note, a rare treat. Dressed in new clothes, the day would be spent visiting a local mela (fair), and the next day, a fun outing to the water park with friends — making Eid a two-day celebration full of happiness.
Now that Munawar is an adult, he finds joy in giving Eidi instead of receiving it. He expressed that the true beauty of Eid lies in this act of sharing happiness. "The tables have turned," he said, explaining how it feels wonderful to now bring smiles to the younger generation by giving Eidi. Every time he gives, he is reminded of his own childhood excitement.
Eid, for Munawar, is also a time for gratitude. Reflecting on a personal memory, he recalled his school days when a friend’s mother’s harsh words forced him to walk to school instead of riding their bicycle. He then prayed for his own bicycle, and when he finally got it, he felt he had everything he ever wanted. Today, sitting in his beautiful apartment in Mumbai, Munawar often looks back on those times with a heart full of appreciation for how far he has come.
Though he enjoys cooking, Munawar admits he does not experiment in the kitchen during Eid. He prefers to stick to classics — especially biryani, which he believes tastes extra special when prepared on this festive day. The joy of cooking in large quantities and sharing it with loved ones enhances the entire experience.
This year’s Eid celebration holds even deeper meaning for Munawar, as it is his first Eid with his wife, Mehzabeen. He expressed how perfectly timed their marriage feels and how celebrating Eid with his partner and their extended family has added an extra layer of warmth to the occasion. Together, they host a grand daawat (feast) for family and friends, making the festival even more memorable.
