Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, currently waiting for the release of his forthcoming film "Veerappan", says its making is not about "glorifying a criminal".

"Veerappan" is based on the dreaded sandalwood smuggler Koose Muniswamy Veerappan. It features how a man-hunt was initiated to kill him.

The "Satya" director took to Twitter to say that the movie was made to put "a mirror to how he was allowed to happen in the first place".

"Making 'Veerappan' is not about glorifying a criminal but it's to put a mirror to how he was allowed to happen in the first place," Varma tweeted on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old filmmaker shared that the story is a proof of an unpredictable man.

"Story of Veerappan is a proof that just one unpredictable man can overturn an entire existing system. Same is true for Donald Trump too," he added.

Varma asserted that it is important to study about bad people "like Veerappan because knowledge of how to finish bad people is what which advances society".

The film stars Sandeep Bharadwaj, Sachin Joshi, Usha Jadhav and Lisa Ray.
