Kate Winslet opens up about confronting body shamers in her early career

Kate Winslet reflected on confronting body shamers during the early stages of her acting career, becoming emotional as she shared her experience with offensive comments about her weight. The Titanic star recounted how she had to stand up to critics, both in public and in interviews, who made hurtful jokes about her appearance.

During a recent talk show appearance, Winslet revealed that she was targeted not only by the public but also by a red carpet interviewer. She described the remarks as "absolutely appalling" and expressed disbelief, questioning, "What kind of person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?"

The actress recalled a specific encounter when she faced one of her bullies in person. “I let them have it,” Winslet shared, adding, “I said, ‘I hope this haunts you.’ It was a great moment. It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me. It was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific. It was really bad.”

Winslet also tearfully shared how one of her teachers once told her, “Now, listen, Kate. I’m telling you, darling, if you’re going to look like this, you’ll have to settle for the fat girl parts.” Despite the emotional weight of those words, the actress said the negative comments ultimately fueled her determination to prove herself, both on and off screen.

As Winslet continued to reflect on her early experiences in Hollywood, she recognized that she wasn’t alone in facing body shaming. Many other actresses were also criticized for their appearance, whether it was their makeup or fashion choices.
