Kajol’s blunt take on Shah Rukh Khan’s DDLJ sequel idea will leave fans divided

Kajol, who famously played Simran in the 1995 romantic classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge alongside Shah Rukh Khan, has made it clear that she would not return for a sequel, if it were ever planned. Her reasons, rooted in her belief about preserving a film’s magic, reflect her candid outlook on storytelling.

While promoting her upcoming horror film Maa, Kajol was asked about the possibility of DDLJ 2. In a conversation with Pinkvilla, she firmly dismissed the idea of continuing the iconic love story. “Each film has a certain amount of magic that it produces. I can’t imagine DDLJ 2,” she said, adding, “Train ke baad kya hua? Kisi ko pata bhi nahin karna hai. Do you really want to know whether they fought over diapers or not? You don’t want to know.”

Kajol emphasised that the ending of DDLJ – with Raj helping Simran onto the moving train – had the perfect emotional closure. “It’s wonderful that it’s left at the end. Train chali gayi. THE END, brilliant. Now you can just leave it to imagination. They lived happily ever after,” she added.

Alongside her comments on DDLJ, Kajol also reflected on her long career. Speaking earlier at News18’s Rising Bharat Summit 2025, she admitted she hasn’t worked as much as many of her peers. “I am the least worked actor in the whole film industry,” she said. “Puri film industry mein jo log recently aaye hai unhone mujhse zyada kaam kiya hoga. I choose to be lazy. I choose to have a slower life.”

Kajol’s career, though selective, spans genres—from classics like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to experimental titles. Her latest, Maa, directed by Vishal Furia, marks her first foray into horror. She also stars in Maharagni – Queen of Queens, reuniting with Prabhu Deva after 27 years. Previously seen in Netflix’s Do Patti, she portrayed a police officer.

Through it all, Kajol continues to balance work with her personal life, choosing roles that challenge her, yet staying rooted in her values as an artist.
