Jimmy Sheirgill happy to see Punjabi cinema's popularity

Mumbai, Jan 26 (IANS) Bollywood actor Jimmy Sheirgill, who has also carved a niche for himself in the Punjabi films, is glad to see increasing popularity of Punjabi cinema, but feels it is just the tip of the iceberg.

"Punjabi cinema should be even bigger because we have Punjabis all across the world. I think regional languages have been doing well but Punjabi films have now started getting decent opening," Jimmy told IANS.

"But I still feel it is the tip of the iceberg. I still feel there is a lot of audience out there, who don't watch our Punjabi films even though they are Punjabi. A lot of audience is not coming out to watch Punjabi films and we have to get them out of their houses and get them to the theatres," he added.

The actor, who has been part of Punjabi films like "Mel Karade Rabba" and "Dharti", is looking forward to the release of his new production venture "Rangeelay", which features him and Neha Dhupia in the lead.

"I do one Punjabi film a year. I am excited about my new Punjabi film 'Rangeelay' with Neha Dhupia. I am coming after two years so I am very excited about it. The film was due to release last year, but since I was unwell, it is releasing now," said the 42-year-old.

While Hindi films have set a benchmark of Rs.100 crore, Jimmy says Punjabi films are raking in Rs.50 crore so far.

"Few years down the line even our Punjabi films will be in the Rs.100 crore ball game. Right now, we collect around Rs.50 crore. I am hoping my next film 'Rangeelay' will hit this (Rs.100 crore) benchmark," he added.
