As we all know, A 16-year-old queer teen from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain ended his life after being relentlessly trolled on social media for wearing sarees and putting on makeup. On this tragic event Nivedita Basu (VP of Content and Business Alliance, Atrangii TV and OTT) shares her point of view.

She says,”I did learn about this MP queer who committed suicide. I think the reason why it's on your face is also because of social media. Who would have thought that social media can have such a negative impact? It is not only about this particular case but also. We know so many of our friends in the media who belong to the  LGBTQ community. One would have thought because there is so much exposure, there will be acceptance. I know when that whole Supreme Court case was being fought, everyone was very opinionated, and they thought the final verdict would be positive towards the community. It should happen because we know people who are partners and live in relationships or probably even in a married relationship have been hopeful, but because of that whole setback, the whole community really felt bad.” Nivedita feels there should be some thumb rule on social media when the trolls get filtered and it should not show on the timeline.

She adds,” What has happened is very shameful. When I think of that 16-year-old boy I feel it is so commendable that from such a small town he became a self-made make-up artist and also had his own work.  What really triggered him and why he took this drastic step we don’t know. I think there should be some filter on Instagram for show even for trolls and for negative comments. Even though they have done filtering and you can block negative comments, but I think for a common man to be that tech-savvy is asking too much. I feel that if automatically with the help of AI the negative comments can be made invalid, that will be a good solution.”
