How Sameer & Naina's LOVE LETTER track took us back to SIMPLER DAYS when..
.. a piece of paper could carry more emotions than a swanky smartphone's SMS or a WhatsApp message.

Cell phones, internet and other forms of communication in this day and age are a bane, as much as they are a boon. But, how often do we find ourselves getting nostalgic and reminiscent about simpler times?
Such is the magic Sony TV's Yeh Un Dino Ki Baat Hai creates. From day one, the show has managed to exhibit the authenticity of the 90s in the best way possible, and it continues to do so.
But, this past week saw the grief and the bliss of that pain of separation between two young lovers. Not everyone can probably relate to this, but we do have a barrage of people these days, who were born in the 90s, who not only can relate to it but lived a simpler life, unlike today.

As known by the viewers, Sameer (Randeep Rai) and Naina (Ashi Singh) are currently miles apart from each other, and of course, missing each other terribly. Unlike today, they do not have the liberty to stay in contact as and when they would like.
It was refreshing to see the parallel struggles that the duo is facing as they try to keep their mind and heart in the right place. Amidst all this, cunning grandmother of Sameer and quintessential aunt of Naina continue to make their lives a lot more difficult than it actually is. The only difference is, that Sameer is a rebel and attempts payback, while sweet Naina just endures the wrath.
You may have loved the manner in which the episodes showcased the process of writing the love letter to ensuring it reaches to the right person, but there is something else I noticed and loved a lot more.

Love is certainly portrayed blissfully, but the friendship and sibling love showed in the show is a lot more heartening. Sameer's friends, Ponga and Pandit are adorable and they are as pure as they can be. They love their dear friend, Sameer and continue to cross their limits in ode to help and make Naina (their bhabhi) feel better. There is no pretense, no foul play, but just pure innocence. And that is how friendships were back in the 90s, when we wouldn't define the closeness and strength of a bond by which meme you are tagged in or how many selfies you have with your friend, etc. Rather, you would catch-up with your friends, play street games, talk about daily life and all that would be captured in something lot more important and precious than pictures - memories.

Then, there was the scene where Naina is reading Sameer's letter and for a moment, she just loses herself and starts crying, followed by Preeti and her friend hastily coming to see what's up with her.
It was a beautiful scene which was captured amazingly, but what specifically took my breath away were the performances of the trio, that immediately hit me at the right chord. I could date myself back to watching Malgudi Days Kachchi Dhoop, where the relationships between little ones were portrayed with the genuine purity it had. The friends and siblings cared about the respective person that much that they would feel the same emotion and be restless till it's solved.

Finally, the whole portrayal of how Sameer counted days till the letter would probably reach Naina and Naina's constant distraction to read the letter when it reached her and so on; the finesse with which the blissful pain, genuine love and experiencing emotions were portrayed was as pronouncing as it could get.

Even though, I am a 90s kid, by the time I grew up and had my first encounter at love and relationships, technology was already on an advancing stage. For us- 90s kids, mobile phones entered our lives only when we reached college and even then, the call rates were too expensive to talk for hours and hours. So, sneaking out and going to call your partner through a PCO or sending an SMS (while looking that it is long enough to be one message and not cross the word limit) was the struggle we went through.

And amidst all this, we would still manage to write and sneak in a love letter, when we would meet, thinking that the person will be pleasantly surprised going back home and reading it.

The separation for Sameer and Naina is all set to finally end next week, as Sameer will be coming back to Naina from Delhi and the meeting will have its moments too. We have seen that Sameer will get mad on Naina for some reason, but that's the drama we will have to wait for.
For now, if this piece has convinced you to become old-school again and write a letter for your loved one, now is the time folks!
