While theatres have shut their doors for a while, entertainment is only a click away. With the advent of digital platforms, captivating content can be consumed anyhow, anytime and anywhere. Here's a look at five of the finest films on Amazon Prime, now streaming on your home screens:

  • 1) Room (2015)
Room

Brie Larson. Nuff said! One of the most charming talents in world cinema, Room marks Ms Larson’s foray into the big league with a stunning performance that fetched her a plethora of awards right from the much-coveted Oscar to the Critics Choice Award, Screen Actors Guild Award as well as the BAFTA.

The film tells the story of an abused mother and her innocent son, trapped in the confines of a claustrophobic shed. How did they get here? Who is holding them captive? Will they ever taste freedom? The Lenny Abrahamson directorial keeps us glued to our seats as we find answers to these questions.

  • 2) Hereditary (2018)
Hereditary

Don’t forget to keep the lights on for this spookfest! Director Arri Aster’s debut feature manages to scare the heebie-jeebies out of us without resorting to the age-old tropes like creaking doors or howling wolves.

When the eerily secretive grandmother passes away, a normal family discovers some sinister skeletons lurking around. Bloody deaths, demonic possessions, evil spirits, the Toni Collette starrer ticks all the boxes for being the perfect treat to fans of horror.

  • 3) Lone Survivor (2013)
Lone Survivor (2013)

“You can die for your country, I'm gonna live for mine”, this line from Lone Survivor

encapsulates the kind of film it is: Raw, intense and hard-hitting.

Mark Wahlberg headlines the cast as US Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell, who, along with his fearless team, tides through hell and back on a mission gone awry. Based on true events during wartime in Afghanistan, the film is a must-watch for people who like their coffee and their cinema, to be unfiltered and strong.

  • 4) American Hustle (2013)
American Hustle (2013)

Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, how could one say no to this irresistible combo of superstars? Ace filmmaker David O. Russell brings together an ensemble for the ages in his widely acclaimed crime drama.

Taking a cue off the FBI’s abscam operation in the late 1970s, the film features Bale and Adams as two sneaky con artists who are lured by an inspector to work undercover for the government. What follows is an unbelievable ride of heartbreak and deception.

  • 5) Foxcatcher (2014)
Foxcatcher (2014)

Steve “The Office” Carell in a dark, serious and edgy role! Where do we sign up?

In a stroke of genius and out of the box casting, Foxcatcher sees Mr Carrel essay on the role of John du Pont, the infamous millionaire who was found guilty of the murder of American Olympic Dave Schultz.

Also starring Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Vanessa Redgrave, the film blends the adrenaline of a sports story with the thrills of a true-crime drama, delivering an experience never seen before.

Our weekend visit to the silver screen may have taken a break, but these films bring the best of Hollywood right to our doorsteps with an exceptional assortment of mind-blowing stories. The venue might have changed, but the magic of movies remains the same.
