Mumbai, Sep 23 (IANS) Planet E Shop Holdings India Ltd (PESHIL), an affiliate of Hinduja Ventures, has obtained the government's permission to downlink and distribute foreign TV channels and content in India.

In a statement issued here Monday, Subhashish Mazumdar, the company's business head, said the government's green signal to distribute foreign TV channels and content would help integrate and strengthen the Hinduja Group's media business.

'Based on India's downlinking policies, PESHIL will take care of the content aggregation, marketing and distribution of foreign television content,' Mazumdar said.

The first channel to be distributed by PESHIL is South Korea's Arirang TV, a state-owned international English satellite channel.

Mazumdar revealed that PESHIL is also in talks with premier channels from Europe, Asia and Middle-East for exclusive marketing and distribution tie-ups for distribution in India across various platforms, including IPTV, DTH, digital cable and even mobile TV.

According to Mazumdar, following the digitalisation of the television industry in India, more than 100 global channels are eyeing the Indian market for potential revenues through subscription, advertisement and programming content bouquets.

As of now, there are over 370 channels already cleared under uplinking and downlinking policies of the information and broadcasting ministry and over 150 channels are awaiting clearance.

Mazumdar also said tying up with Hinduja Ventures would provide the foreign channels with a readymade distribution platform, while the Indian audiences would benefit from a wide array of global entertainment content.
