Five Iconic Show Finales That Were Not 'Divisive' & Hated Universally (Well, Almost)

The finale of these shows was unlike the Game Of Thrones finale which, at the best, had divided audience...

Okay! It is over now but I don't blame the viewers to continue to be madly dissatisfied with a particular show's finale, especially when it is as big as Game Of Thrones. Unlike some, I did not find the finale to be a disappointment per se even though I had issues with it. At the most, I was partially satisfied with how it ended where the rest of the season, as we know has been a trainwreck. Will the finale of Thrones make it to the worst finales in the future? I don't know but what I do know is that there were a few iconic shows whose final episodes did not impress a large section of the audience as opposed to just being 'divisive.'

There were plenty to pick from but here are five shows whose finales were almost unanimously disliked:

5. How I Met Your Mother

You would be lying if you feel that you have already gotten over this one. A show that was once touted to achieve iconic status as much as F.R.I.E.N.D.S totally screwed it up in finale. Of all the ways, the story of how Ted met the mother of his future children could have wound up, nobody wanted it to involve killing off the mom and seeing Ted reunite with Robin. Many fans anyway considered Ted and Robin's romantic pairing to be one of the worst ever. Adding to that blunder was topped by the level of effort that the audience had to take in the exhausting Robin/Barney relationship.

Almost unanimously hated.

HIMYM

4. Seinfeld

At times, it is impossible to believe that the finale of Seinfeld was reportedly watched by over 76 million viewers back then. And when you have a combined viewership of several countries, it certainly isn't a possibility to please them all, right? Well. That is what the makers of Seinfeld would have defended too but the flak that the finale of Seinfeld received was too tremendous to defend. In a contrast between two of the principal cast members, Jerry Seinfeld, himself admitted that he does 'regret the finale' sometimes when he said, "I sometimes think we really shouldn’t have even done it"; whereas Jason Alexander recently tweeted in support of Game Of Thrones' divisive reception linking it with Seinfeld finale.

3. Lost

Funnily, the finales of both Lost and Game Of Thrones had similar problems. One of the biggest one was how there was way too much going on till the end  but it was so badly rushed and left a brim of it till the final episode. One episode is never enough to give multiple conclusions to several characters when you have rushed storylines especially after a slow-and-steady pace in the initial seasons. And hence, Lost continues to be remembered for having a bizarre finale episode after being a fantastic series overall. Now that I think of it, Thrones may similarly make it to a future list like this.

2. Dexter

Another iconic show and literally the worst way to end it. The makers of Dexter seemingly forgot how the show was about a serial-killer even though they created it themselves. And with the finale of the show, the way it was given a happily-ever-after ending rubbed the critics and fans alike in the worst possible way. The scene in which Dexter gives his sister Debra a burial at sea and ends up becoming a lumberjack was especially hated and Michael C. Hall, who played the lead also admitted later that he was somewhat disappointed with the way it ended.

1. House Of Cards

Before even you assume, this is not about how the finale would have been better if it had Kevin Spacey in it. No way! I kept reiterating on how, in fact, I was happier that Claire Underwood (played by Robin Wright) taking the lead intrigued me so much that I was the most excited one when the final season arrived. And while Robin's performance was, as usual, her brilliant best, the overall season continued to be up and down leading to the finale, But the finale made things terribly worse as it will go down as one of the most abrupt, perplexing and disappointing finales of a particular show. Apart from Claire killing Doug off, which was rather expected, everything was left hanging in the balance irking the viewers immensely.

Game of thrones only was disappointing in what happened to Daenerys. I wanted Jaime to betray Cersei and end her instead of Daenerys killing innocents and then Jon killing her. Daenerys arc liberating people was quite inspiring. I was pretty satisfied by what happened to Jon Sansa Tyrion. The Jon ghost scene was sweet
