Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, has been formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their tragic deaths. The couple was found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home over the weekend, sparking widespread shock and grief in the Hollywood community.
Development in Nick Reiner’s case
On Sunday afternoon, the bodies of actor-director Rob Reiner, 78, and photographer-producer Michele Reiner, 70, were found in their Brentwood home. Following an investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested their son, Nick Reiner, 32, several hours later. He was apprehended without resistance at a park in downtown Los Angeles, near the University of Southern California.
On Tuesday, the case was handed over to the District Attorney's Office. Later that day, a five-page criminal complaint was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Nick Reiner, including two counts of first-degree murder.
The murders of Rob and Michele Reiner, considered among the most shocking celebrity killings in Los Angeles history, drew comparisons to the 1994 deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
"Their loss is beyond tragic," County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated at a press conference. "We will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice."
Verdict in the case
District Attorney Hochman announced that the charges against Nick Reiner could result in a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty, though the decision on whether to pursue capital punishment was still pending.
Hochman stated that prosecutors "will take the thoughts and desires of the family into consideration" when deciding the penalty.
The district attorney and charging documents indicated that a knife was used in the killings, but provided no further details. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
When asked about the murder weapon, Hochman said details would be revealed in court. Autopsies are pending to determine the exact cause, manner, and time of death. Reports from various news outlets suggest that Nick Reiner had a heated argument with his parents on Saturday night at a holiday party hosted by Conan O'Brien.
Nick Reiner, the Reiners' middle child, has admitted to a long-term struggle with substance abuse. He has been held without bail at a Los Angeles County lockup since being booked on suspicion of murder on Sunday night.
Both Hochman and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell declined to comment on whether Nick Reiner was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of his arrest, or if he provided any statements to the police. They have not released any information on the suspect's condition or any statements made during the arrest.
Alan Jackson, the defense attorney for Nick Reiner, stated that his client had not yet received medical clearance for his initial court appearance on Tuesday, but it was possible he would be arraigned on Wednesday. Hochman confirmed that obtaining medical clearance for court appearances is standard procedure for all criminal defendants.
ROB REINER'S HOLLYWOOD LEGACY
Nick Reiner has discussed periods of homelessness stemming from his refusal to seek treatment for substance abuse, having entered rehab for the first time at age 15. These experiences served as the inspiration for the movie "Being Charlie," co-written by Reiner and his father.
"It was the most personal thing I've ever been involved in," Rob Reiner told podcaster Marc Maron in 2016.
Rob Reiner is best known for his role as Mike "Meathead" Stivic in the TV comedy "All in the Family." He later became a successful filmmaker, directing movies such as "This Is Spinal Tap," "The Princess Bride," and "When Harry Met Sally...". A sequel to "This Is Spinal Tap" was released this year, 41 years after the original.
Michele, Rob Reiner's wife, is a former photographer known for capturing the image of Donald Trump used on the cover of his book "Trump: The Art of the Deal." They married in 1989 after meeting during the filming of "When Harry Met Sally."
Rob Reiner, a New York City native and son of Carl Reiner, is also recognized for his political activism and support of the Democratic Party. He was previously married to Penny Marshall, who starred in "Laverne & Shirley," and was the adoptive father of Marshall's daughter.
