Fact Check: Rupa Dutta Accuses Anurag Kashyap of Misconduct, Shares Chats BUT Mistakes Filmmaker With Anurag Safar

A few days ago, actress Payal Ghosh had accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of sexual misconduct publicly. In a tweet, she alleged that the filmmaker forced himself on her and tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action in this case.

After Payal, actor Rupa Dutta made allegations of sleazy behaviour against Anurag Kashyap. The actress accused the director of sending inappropriate messages and also supported Payal Ghosh in her statement. Rupa shared screengrabs of a Facebook chat that she claimed to have with Kashyap. In her tweet, she also said that Kashyap did drugs and supplied it to his artistes.

"Hello friends. This is from the time in 2014 when I used to talk to Anurag Kashyap. His ID was Anurag Safar on Facebook. I stopped talking to him because he was talking inappropriately. This man does not even know the limit of disgusting behaviour. There is no respect for any woman in the eyes of Anurag Kashyap. Which is what I found out after knowing him. All of you must have come to know from my and Anurag’s conversation. That is why Payal Ghosh’s allegation is correct. Anurag Kashyap should be punished harshly. And he takes drugs too. Supplies to his artistes too. NCB should investigate, please. #arrestanuragkashyab," Rupa shared.

Post this, Rupa was also invited for an interview on a TV news channel, where she opened up about her experience and accused Kashyap of misconduct.

However, it seems like Rupa fell prey to a big confusion as she has mistaken Anurag Kashyap to Anurag Safar, a man who lives in Ireland. The messages sent to the actress reportedly belong to Anuraf Safar, and not the filmmaker. 

Several people over the years have mistaken this man for Anurag Kashyap and often tagged him in issues related to the filmmaker or otherwise. Back in 2010, Anurag Safar had also clarified that he isn’t filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. 

"Pl Excuse me, friends!!! I am not film director or producer Anurag Kashyap. I am another Anurag. Please do not bug me considering him," the user had cleared the air in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap’s lawyer has issued a press statement and denied the allegations levelled against him. “These allegations are completely false, malicious and dishonest. It is sad that a social movement as important as the #metoo movement has been co-opted by vested interests and reduced to a mere tool for character assassination” read an excerpt from the statement.

 Anurag has denied all the allegations of sexual assault, and his colleagues and female actors who have worked with him in the past have stood in support of him. Actors like Taapsee Pannu, Radhika Apte, Huma Qureshi among others took to social media to show their support. Kashyap’s ex-partners Kalki Koechlin and Arti Bajaj too had defended him through social media posts.
