David Schwimmer, widely loved for his role as Ross Geller in Friends, has recently opened up about a surprising aspect of his past: his strong dislike for the show’s iconic theme song, I’ll Be There for You by The Rembrandts. While fans across the world cherish the track, Schwimmer revealed that, for a long time, he couldn’t stand hearing it.
During his appearance on the Making a Scene podcast with Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the 58-year-old actor confessed that the theme song, which played before every episode, became unbearable due to constant repetition. He said, “I’ll be really honest, there was a time for quite a while that just hearing the theme song would really uggh.”
Schwimmer explained that his aversion to the track stemmed from the overwhelming fame that came with Friends’ massive success. Before the sitcom aired, director Jim Burroughs had taken the cast to Las Vegas and warned them about the upcoming wave of stardom. He recalled Burroughs telling them, “Remember this moment, it’s the last time you’re going to be able to walk through a casino like this.”
Schwimmer truly understood Burroughs’ words when fame hit him full force. Recalling an overwhelming fan encounter at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), he said, “I hear a blood-curdling scream. I was genuinely frightened. I thought someone was being stabbed or something. And a group of girls come and like literally just scream and grab me. And they won’t let me go.”
Despite his initial struggles with fame and his dislike for the theme song, Schwimmer’s perspective has changed over the years. The turning point came when his daughter, around the age of nine, discovered Friends and started watching it. Hearing her laugh while watching the show made him appreciate it in a new light. He shared, “ My whole relationship to that song and to the show changed again.”
The revelation about his past dislike for the Friends theme song has surprised many fans, but Schwimmer’s journey from frustration to nostalgia highlights the deep impact of the show. Even after decades, Friends remains a global phenomenon, and Schwimmer’s evolving relationship with it only adds to its charm.
