Chhava: Is Vicky Kaushal’s historical-epic drama eyeing a Shivaji Jayanti release? Deets inside

Vicky Kaushal is gearing up to bring history alive with his upcoming historical drama, Chhaava. The actor will take on the role of the revered Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, while Rashmika Mandanna portrays Yesubai Bhonsale, his wife. The much-anticipated film is now slated for a mid-February 2025 release, aligning with the cultural significance of Shivaji Jayanti on February 19.

According to a recent media report by Midday, the film’s release could fall on February 14 or 21, aiming to maximize its impact by tapping into the patriotic fervor surrounding Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary. This strategic move comes after the film’s original release date of December 6, 2024, was postponed to avoid a clash with Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2, which hits theaters on December 5.

The buzz around Chhaava began with the teaser launched earlier this year. The 1.12-minute video showcased Vicky Kaushal in a fierce and intense avatar, coupled with dramatic war sequences that hint at the grandeur of this period drama.

Speaking about the project last year, Kaushal said, “It’s the first time for me. It’s a period drama but we are making it very seriously and there is a lot of action in it; lot of drama in it; very high on emotions and it really is a spectacular story.”

Directed by Laxman Utekar, who previously collaborated with Kaushal on Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, the film features an ensemble cast, including Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta in pivotal roles. Adding to the anticipation is the music by AR Rahman, further elevating the film’s appeal.

Backed by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Chhaava also marks the first on-screen collaboration between Kaushal and Mandanna. With its compelling narrative, stellar cast, and cultural significance, Chhaava is poised to be one of the most awaited releases of 2025.
