The 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case that took place in Delhi shocked the entire nation. The four men convicted of the rape and murder with barbarity of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in Delhi were hanged till death at 5:30 am on Friday, March 20, 2020. After 7-long-years of the brutal incidence, justice has finally been served with the hanging of the culprits at the Tihar Jail.
The convicts - Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma were hanged under tight security as hundreds of police personnel were deployed outside the jail to control a crowd that waited to celebrate the hangings. While Nirbhaya’s mother has finally breathed a sigh of relief, social media has been more than just a platform that celebrated the hanging. Many celebrities like Riteish Deshmukh, Preity Zinta, Taapsee Pannu, amongst others shared their thoughts over the same.
Highlighting that the justice has been served, Riteish Deshmukh tweeted, "Stricter law enforcement, harsher punishment & fast courts for quick justice is the only way to instil fear in monsters who even think of such heinous acts. #JusticeForNirbhaya." He also sent out his prayers to the family and friends of Nirbhaya.
Preity Zinta took to Twitter handle and wrote, "Finally the #Nirbhayacase comes to an end. I wish it would have been faster but I’m happy it’s over. Finally she & her parents are in peace. #RIPJyoti #RIPNirbhaya #Justicedelayed #TookTooLong."
Taapsee Pannu who has been about the issue also tweeted, "It’s done. Finally. I hope the parents can finally sleep slightly better tonight after YEARS. It’s been a long long battle for them. Asha Devi."
For the uninitiated, Nirbhaya who was gang-raped, brutally assaulted and thrown off the moving bus, was fighting for her life for nearly two weeks before succumbing to her injuries. She died in a hospital in Singapore, where she had been airlifted, on December 29, 2012.
As per the reports, in total 7 convicts were held in the Nirbhaya rape case. One of them who was juvenile was released after 3 years in a reform facility, and one named Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide in 2013.
