Angry BTS ARMYs slam 9Now for their racist comments on their biases!

The 9Now spoke about the popular K-pop boy-band BTS stating that it is ‘the biggest band you’ve never heard of’…

BTS

Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) is a seven-member South Korean boy-band, formed in Seoul in 2013. It’s been six years, since they started making music and inspired people with their journey. Their fans, known as ARMY, idolise them not just because of their ‘pretty faces’ as someone might say, but also because their music.

The songs that they write and sing have touched upon taboo subjects like depression. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their journey from ‘I Need You Girl’ to ‘You can’t stop me loving myself’ has been applaudable! Ask any army if you want.

Since they started their journey, BTS has won many accolades and appreciations world-wide. They even gave a speech at the UN (United Nations), where their leader RM talked about just accepting oneself irrespective of cast, race, and colour.

Recently, the Nine Network aired a popular countdown show 20 to 1, where they mention top 20 global crazes. They mentioned the K-pop king BTS on number 18. The army were excited to watch the segment that consisted of their biases. But, the segment became a huge disappointment and enraged the fans when co-host Erin Molan labelled them as “the biggest band you’ve never heard of”, before explaining “only one band member speaks English”. UK Comedian Jimmy Carr, added that “when I first heard something Korean had exploded in America, I got worried… so it could have been worse. But not much worse.”

Shortly, #channel9apologize was a trending hashtag on Twitter in Australia.

According to The Music Network, Billboard K-pop editor Jeff Benjamin told them that the segment made 9Now look “very out of touch with what’s actually resonating with young people and quite lazy as entertainers.

“What’s perhaps most unfortunate to me as a journalist though is how the program actually did some substantial research into BTS’ careers, like seeing they spoke at the United Nations, but diminished and belittled such accomplishments into wisecracks.”

He also said that the issue was likely a matter of race, and suggested: “If this band were white, I don’t think cracks about how many members there are or jabs at their lyrics would be as present.”

Though, comedian Alex Williamson felt differently. He took to his social media account and shared, “it ain’t racist they just don’t give a f*ck about boy bands who are designed solely to extract dollars from the hip pocket of 14yo’s. I’ll always revel in the genuine talents of South Korean professors such as Cheon Jinwoo”

That tweet only escalated the issue further and #firealexwilliamson began trending. In classic form, Williamson embraced the hashtag, he wrote “I don’t work guys” and went on to suggest that it was a wider “boybands are a gimmick” issue.
