Amaal Malik recalls being dumped while working on Kabir Singh due to his religion; says, 'DDLJ in me woke up'

Singer and composer Amaal Mallik has always been very candid about his personal life. Whether it is his struggle with mental health or the rift with his brother Armaan Mallik, he has never shied away from speaking about difficult phases in his life. In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, he said that he broke up with his long-time girlfriend when he was working on Kabir Singh. He said it was a “very difficult phase” emotionally as she left him and married someone else.

Further on, he spoke about how inter-faith marriage is a struggle even for well-established professionals like him. It seems the family of his girlfriend did not want their daughter married to someone who was related to showbiz or worked in the industry. Amaal Mallik said he was gearing up for a gig when she called him up to say that her marriage was fixed elsewhere. His girlfriend was ready to elope with him if he would come to her. Amaal Mallik said, “But, I guess the SRK from DDLJ in me woke up and said, ‘No, if your parents can’t accept my religion and respect my career, then I wish you the best.'”

He said many people have assumed that he follows Islam. He is the son of Daboo Mallik, who is a Muslim. His mother is a Hindu from the Saraswat Brahmin caste. Amaal Mallik said he is more spiritual than religious. He told Kannan, “I go to Mt Mary in Bandra when feeling empty. We are spiritual. We believe in God, but we don’t fear God. There is no ‘kattar’ anything.”

He said his field of work created more issues than religion. The girl was from a Jaat family. Amaal Mallik said, “They were like you are from Islamic background. I was like there is not even I of Islam in me. I don’t follow the religion to the T. I am the least religious guy. I believe in Karma. We neutrally respect every religion.”
