On April 25, a fake AI-generated teaser created a stir across social media, showing Aamir Khan in the role of Guru Nanak. The teaser, shared by an unofficial YouTube channel with no ties to any recognized production house, also featured Kareena Kapoor. It quickly gained traction, sparking widespread controversy, with many viewers questioning its authenticity.
The teaser, claiming to be a promotional clip for a Guru Nanak biopic, displayed Aamir Khan dressed as the revered Sikh spiritual leader, while also asserting that T-Series was backing the film. However, several viewers pointed out that the channel behind the teaser was unaffiliated with T-Series, and the video itself appeared to be AI-generated. This raised doubts about the credibility of the entire project.
In response to the uproar, Aamir Khan’s spokesperson issued an official statement to clarify the situation and put an end to the confusion. The statement read, "The poster showing Aamir Khan as Guru Nanak is completely fake and AI generated. Aamir Khan has no connection to any such project. He holds the highest respect for Guru Nanak and would never be part of anything disrespectful. Please don’t fall for fake news." This clarification came as a relief to many, as the actor reaffirmed his commitment to respecting Guru Nanak's legacy.
The teaser, although fabricated, quickly sparked controversy, especially after it was shared widely on social media. A BJP leader in Punjab, Pritpal Singh Baliawal, expressed concern, accusing the video of deliberately trying to provoke the Sikh community by casting a Muslim actor in the role of the Sikh guru. In response, Baliawal filed a complaint with the SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee), urging the Punjab Police, Cyber Cell, and other security agencies to track down the individuals responsible for creating and sharing the video. Baliawal requested that the authorities trace the IP addresses of those behind the fake teaser and take appropriate legal action.
Aamir Khan, who was last seen in the 2022 release Laal Singh Chaddha alongside Kareena Kapoor, will next appear in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to his 2008 hit Taare Zameen Par. The film is expected to release later this year, though no official release date has been confirmed. Sitaare Zameen Par also stars Genelia D’Souza, and fans are eagerly awaiting Aamir's return to the big screen after a gap following Laal Singh Chaddha’s commercial failure.
The incident with the AI-generated teaser has now been cleared up, but it serves as a reminder of the potential risks of misinformation and the influence of digital manipulation in today’s world.
