The Hindi film industry yet again received a major blow on Thursday evening by the arrival of another piece of bad news. India's first woman Oscar winner and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya passed away at 91 in Mumbai.
The designer passed away on Thursday morning in her sleep as she suffered from mild fever and cold, likely to be pneumonia, as per the designer’s daughter, Radhika Gupta.
For the unversed, Bhanu Athaiya worked on several films including Lagaan for which she won a national award.
The 91-year old designer worked with some of the most prominent Bollywood celebrities and even shared a close bond with them. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boney Kapoor and many more celebs took to social media to mourn Bhanu Athiya's demise who had brought the film industry and Indian cinema international recognition.
Taking to his Twitter handle and remembering Athiya's contribution, he wrote, "Bhanuji was one of those film people who beautifully combined accurate research and cinematic flair to bring to life the director's vision. You will be missed Bhanuji. My heartfelt condolences to the family."

Priyanka Chopra shared a picture of Athaiya and wrote, “RIP Bhanu Athaiya. What an amazing body of work- Oscar winning costume designer for Gandhi, the inventor of the Mumtaz saree… an inspiration to so many young designers. Her legacy will live on forever. My condolence to the family.”
