The untold tale of Omkara: How Aamir Khan's busy schedule led to Omkara's casting twist

Vishal Bhardwaj's 2006 masterpiece, Omkara, remains a standout film in Saif Ali Khan's illustrious career, particularly for his compelling portrayal of the cunning Langda Tyagi. However, the intriguing revelation has surfaced that Aamir Khan was initially keen on playing this iconic role. In a recent interview with Mid Day, director Vishal Bhardwaj shared the fascinating backstory of how the part eventually landed in Saif's capable hands.

Bhardwaj disclosed that during a period when he was planning a film with Aamir Khan, the actor expressed a keen interest in portraying Langda Tyagi. "Whenever you make this film, I’d love to be considered for Langda Tyagi," Aamir had conveyed to the director. However, circumstances led to the project's delay, and Bhardwaj found himself without a film for one and a half years.

The director, determined to bring the character to life, considered other actors. Reflecting on Saif Ali Khan's potential for the role, Bhardwaj explained that he had seen Saif’s work at the time, and he thought if this character could excite Aamir so much, then he could excite another star with this. Consequently, Saif Ali Khan emerged as the perfect fit for Langda Tyagi.

When asked about Aamir's absence from Omkara, Bhardwaj revealed that Aamir was occupied with Rang De Basanti, and the director was unwilling to wait for an extended period. He emphasized, "I wanted to (make the film), with whoever I get."

Omkara, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, featured an ensemble cast including Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Konkana Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, and Bipasha Basu. The film garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, earning three National Film Awards, with Konkana Sen Sharma winning the Best Supporting Actress Award.
