Aamir Khan on chemistry with exes, finding love in Gauri, getting therapy & much more

Aamir Khan has always been one of Hindi cinema’s most introspective stars — one who questions, reflects, and recalibrates. After taking a brief step back from acting, he is now returning with Sitaare Zameen Par, a film he describes as an emotional companion piece to Taare Zameen Par. As he dives into this new chapter of his cinematic journey, Aamir is also experiencing a personal evolution — marked not just by self-work, therapy, and family bonds, but also by the unexpected arrival of a new relationship.

In a recent interview with Raj Shamani, Aamir spoke candidly about the phase of emotional healing he underwent post his separation from Kiran Rao. “I thought that I am 58-59 years old and where will I find anyone new or even have the willingness to do so. My therapy had begun by then and I began to realise that I only need to make myself healthy first. If I am loving someone, I love myself first – self love and self respect.”

He shared that he often discussed this realisation with his close friends. “I used to tell my friends as well that I have had two really deep relationships – one with Reena Dutta and one with Kiran Rao, and even today, we are really close and we really respect each other so much. Now, I don't think I will meet anyone where I will have a bond like this with someone. I don't really think so.”

Despite making peace with the idea of not seeking another relationship, life had other plans. “But it was just by pure luck that Gauri and I met and we connected – our friendship increased, love for each other increased, so it just happened. In fact, I was thinking that I have enough people around me in my life. I have my kids, my mother, my siblings – everyone, and I don't need any partner in my life.

His past relationships continue to hold meaningful space in his life. “Kiran, Reena and I still work on Paani foundation together and we meet everyday and work everyday. There is genuine warmth and love for each other because we are family. We aren't husband and wife anymore but we will always be family. They are an inseparable part of my life.”

Reflecting on the emotional journey he has been through, Aamir admitted, “I did believe about two years ago that it might not happen anymore. I had compromised with that as well by now but then I was surprised by Gauri's arrival in my life and it happened. I never felt lonely too because I have got a very close bond with my family and above everything, I have been so close to cinema – that has been my strongest relationship. About 4 years ago, that was my strongest relationship indeed.

”Aamir also spoke about the perception of his relationship with Kiran Rao after their divorce. “Interestingly, in Kiran's case, when we divorced, we were shooting for Laal Singh Chaddha in Ladakh. There was a small village nearby and they had invited us over for a small celebration, and they made us dance where Kiran and I were dancing as well. The video of that began circulating on social media. Following that, many people started commenting – that they have been divorced and they are dancing together, they seem very happy, what's going on here? But I am unable to explain it.

”What remains undeniable is the trust and companionship they continue to share. “I have a very deep bond with Kiran and we are family. During the entire process of Laal Singh Chaddha, she supported me a lot and during Laapata Ladies, I supported her a lot. Hence, I don't believe I have ever felt lonely.”

As Aamir moves forward, both emotionally and professionally, his life seems to have found a rhythm rooted in self-awareness, mutual respect, and creative focus. With Sitaare Zameen Par on the horizon, he is not just returning to the big screen — he is also returning to himself.
