22 Family Episodes from 'Koffee With Karan' ranked from worst to best

I managed to curate a list of all the 22 episodes throughout all the KWK seasons and ranked from worst to best. Note - This list doesn't include spouses and family guests in spouse episodes and is strictly limited to only families.

Koffee With Karan Family Episodes

Koffee With Karan Family Episodes

Spawning almost two decades and seven seasons, Koffee With Karan has been the ultimate one-stop shop of the biggest names in Bollywood coming in and getting candid, controversial and at times absolute bananas. And while the saga has been about all that, the one recurring theme in all seasons has been - family.

Moving over all the madness and controversies, Koffee With Karan has managed to have a plethora of family-oriented episodes that have been warm, insightful, fun and revealing as well. I managed to curate a list of all the 22 episodes throughout all the KWK seasons and ranked from worst to best.

Note - This list doesn't include spouses and family guests in spouse episodes and is strictly limited to only families.

22. Shilpa, Shamita and Sunanda Shetty

Shilpa, Shamita and Sunanda Shetty

Back in Season 2, the rage was that of the resurgence of actor Shilpa Shetty owing to her win in Big Brother. But when it comes to the episode, even though it had both her sister Shamita and mother Sunanda Shetty coming in, it was barely insightful or even casual fun. It became more about them as individuals rather than a family.

21. Ekta Kapoor and Tusshar Kapoor

Ekta Kapoor and Tusshar Kapoor

While fun and controversial in a lot of aspects, the episode featuring siblings Ekta Kapoor and Tusshar Kapoor was a rather dud. Once again, it became all about their individual selves and while the sibling banter and anecdotes was funny, there was barely any chemistry more so due to Tusshar Kapoor's guarded approach about everything being said.

20. Kajol and Ayan Mukerji

Kajol and Ayan Mukerji

It might be news to many even while reading this that Kajol and director Ayan Mukerji are actually related - yes they are cousins. This itself was news back then when they appeared together on Koffee With Karan Season 4. The banter, merry times and humor was on-point with this odd-pair of siblings but other than that, there wasn't too much happening except them addressing their individual newsmaking incidents.

19. Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor

Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor

Koffee With Karan Season 4 was the one that had the infamous 'Alia moment' but Sonam Kapoor wasn't far behind where she answered Robert De Niro to the question of who said 'An eye for an eye makes the world blind.' Unfortunately, that was the most fun part of this episode apart from a few revelations here and there. Inspite of being a father-daughter episode, Anil and Sonam Kapoor wouldn't have too much to talk about that as opposed to other things.

18. Amitabh Bachchan and Shweta Nanda

Amitabh Bachchan and Shweta Nanda

By Season 3, there were several Bachchan pairings that came on but the most adored one easily was Amitabh Bachchan and daughter, Shweta Nanda. While there were a lot of moments to remember and some memorable anecdotes as well, the episode wasn't entirely a hit and had several blanks.

17. Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor

I think I can safely speak for everyone when I say, Season 7 of Koffee With Karan was indeed the worst. But amidst all that, we saw the loved cousin-duo of Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor coming in. While Sonam did a Kareena by coming in pregnant, it seemed like a conscious effort to put more family-oriented segments which worked as well thanks to their actual bond.

16. Rhea, Sonam and Harrshvardhan Kapoor

Rhea, Sonam and Harrshvardhan Kapoor

As I keep writing, I realise how much has Sonam appeared with her family members constantly. But this episode of the Kapoor trio that included Rhea and Harrshvardhan Kapoor was amongst the more fun ones than others. Owing to there being there of them, the episode was a good mixture of taking about their personal selves and innumerable family anecdotes with a sweet message from father Anil Kapoor as well. It also introduced everyone to the fearless Rhea Kapoor as we know now.

15. Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter

Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter

Shahid Kapoor is the only second person to have appeared on all seasons of Koffee With Karan and hence, things needed a shuffle as he appeared with stepbrother Ishaan Khatter on Season 6. The bromance was instantly infectious and it was indeed a lot of fun where being the elder one, Kapoor would tease Khatter on multiple instances but it did lack the family aspect apart from a couple of instances.

14. Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar

This was the first appearance for director Zoya Akhtar and who better than do that with brother Farhan Akhtar. It was the more sophisticated episode where the Akhtars weren't as playful or teasing as you would expect siblings to be but their chemistry, support and warmth for each other was palpable.

13. Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Nanda

Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Nanda

One of the best graphs in Koffee With Karan has been that of Shweta Nanda. After two good appearances earlier, this was Nanda's best appearance and her constant banter with brother Abhishek Bachchan was relatable, funny and loving as well. The highlight though was how she talked about being affected when her brother gets trolled giving just the family touch it needed.

12. Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan

Going back to Season 2, this episode too was extremely special where Saif Ali Khan was in news for her divorce with Amrita Singh and dating Roza Catalano. He was candid about his life and then came in his sister, actor Soha Ali Khan, who was riding high on the success of Rang De Basanti. The siblings were extremely warm and shared interesting things about their family dynamics.

11. Sanjay Dutt and Priya Dutt

Sanjay Dutt and Priya Dutt

Probably the most non-Koffee With Karan episode of all time, this one was pretty much like an episode of Oprah where Sanjay Dutt was emotional, tearing up and reflecting on the turbulent time he was facing at that point of time. Sister Priya Dutt coming in and being her dignified self offering only love and support to her brother was the icing to the cake.

10. Salman Khan and Salim Khan

Salman Khan and Salim Khan

Even though this episode was actually a solo one per se featuring Salman Khan's first Koffee With Karan appearance, the show stealing moment was when his father Salim Khan came in at the end. Being his candid self, senior Khan was brutally honest, incredibly pleasant and amazing as he shared some lovely anecdotes about his superstar son.

9. Saif Ali Khan and Sara Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan and Sara Ali Khan

The actual debut of Sara Ali Khan on any screen, this episode was a newsmaker in every manner you can imagine. And while that was all fun and jest, it were the moments of family anecdotes shared by her and father Saif Ali Khan that was the highlight more than anything else. The case of Saif talking about writing a note for Amrita and Sara coming to his wedding with Kareena is still memorable in the best way.

8. Arjun Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor

Arjun Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor

Another episode that was comforting and delightful in true-blue family aspect was that of Janhvi Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor. Being their absolute honest selves, Arjun, who is one of the best conversationalists in the industry was brilliant talking about the kinda 'modern family' situation they have been involved in.

7. Jackie Shroff and Tiger Shroff

Jackie Shroff and Tiger Shroff

One of the key reasons that this episode is ranked so high is for the sheer fact that we got to see Jackie Shroff come on the show. The man is a vibe in itself and was his usual self thus being entertaining, honest and inspirational even. His affection to Tiger wasn't limited to words where he would almost constantly keep his hand on his and the cameo by wife Ayesha Shroff, who broke down just solidified how amazing the episode was.

6. Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan

Going back in time to Season 1, one of the big moments was having Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan on the same couch. The episode was exactly what you expected it to be. A good mix of fun, banter, father-son bonding and the iconic Malaika Sherawat slo-mo run being discussed.

5. Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol

Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol

It isn't that the episode featuring Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol was entertaining more than several others in the list earlier but the fact that Sunny Deol even agreed to appear was the biggest feat possible. The Deol brothers were as shy as anticipated but even then host Karan Johar managed to open Sunny Deol's fun side a bit and address controversies (from that time).

4. Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor

It is amazing how a Kapoor quiz in this episode actually gave birth to the quiz segment in all the seasons ahead. Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor were fantastic with their cousin bonding and shared some hilarious moments throughout. Who can forget the iconic "I will dance on my sister-in-law's songs" (that time referring to Katrina Kaif) line!

3. Salman, Arbaaz & Sohail Khan

Salman, Arbaaz & Sohail Khan

Ideally, this episode makes it to my personal all-time favorite Top 2 but in the family aspect, this is still one of the best episodes ever. The 100th episode of the series having the Khan brothers together felt like you were sitting in their living room listening to their stories and laughing, marvelling and enjoying every bit of it.

2. Emraan Hashmi and Mahesh Bhatt

Emraan Hashmi and Mahesh Bhatt

I mean come on, get me a more brutally honest, unbelievably candid and more sophisticated episode than that of Emraan Hashmi and Mahesh Bhatt. From addressing their dysfunctional family situation with humor to giving the first ever rapid-fire where neither guest skipped any question - this Koffee With Karan Season 4 episode will be remembered.

1. Rishi, Randhir & Rajiv Kapoor with Reema Jain and Neetu Kapoor

Rishi, Randhir & Rajiv Kapoor with Reema Jain and Neetu Kapoor

What can scream family more than actually having a full-fledged family on the show. The never-seen-again Kapoor brother trio of Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor came on the show and were absolutely fantastic. The Kapoor clan was introduced to the masses in the best way possible and then came in the appearances of Rishi's wife and actor Neetu Singh Kapoor and the sister to the Kapoor brothers, Reema Kapoor Jain. It became an absolute treat to see them.
