"Actor Prithviraj is likely to play the lead role and there will be three heroines. The shooting will start in September," informs Thiruselvam. He promises that the movie will be family- oriented and entertaining. As Kolangal is a women-oriented subject, will the movie also focus on women issues?
"Yes, I feel there are so many untold stories of women. There are so many emotional clashes there. Whatever I can't tell through this serial, I will be telling through this film," he says.
Thiruselvam also did a lot of documentaries and docudramas. Hailing from a small village near Pattukottai, Thiruselvam did his Bsc Physics before joining the film institute in Chennai. Though specialising in sound engineering, Thiruselvam always wanted to be a director.
"I feel a director should have sound knowledge of technical issues also. I worked as a sound engineer in a couple of Malayalam movies. That was the time, my friend Thirumurugan called me to work as his associate in Metti Oli serial. I also did a small role in the serial which was well received," he says.
"First I was reluctant to act. But then I accepted. After the serial, I got an opportunity to direct a serial for Vikatan. That's when Kolangal happened," explains Thiruselvam.
Acting as a good friend for Abinaya (Devyani), Tholkapium (Thiruselvam) has definitely captured the attention of viewers, particularly women.
"I get a lot of calls. I really don't know from where they get my number. They discuss about their personal issues and ask for a solution. I am so surprised. Some women tell me that they want a good friend like Tholkapium. I feel a woman needs a good male friend," he says with a laugh.
"I was very shy and never used to speak to girls till my college days. But, now I have a lot of women friends," says Thiruselvam, who won the Tamil Nadu Government's Best Achiever Award for Kolangal.
"My wife, Bharathi, worked as a civil engineer and this was my inspiration for Kolangal, where the protagonist Abinaya is a builder. Bharathi, who worked as a site engineer, was not treated properly. But she won't tell me anything. She is bold. Only after many years, she told me about the problems she faced at her workplace.
But soon, people understood her talent. I used to observe the construction place and my wife's job. I have incorporated all of this in the serial," says Thiruselvam who named the serial's lead actress after his daughter's name Abinaya.
Thiruselvam has also started a production house 'Kolankal Creations' and is planning to produce both serials and films in the near future. So when will Kolangal end?
"The serial will be over in other three to four months," he informs.
