Action films in India have progressed by leaps and bounds. From the 'dishoom-dishoom' varieties to the more sophisticated versions, the adrenaline in Indian films has always been ascending. In these action films, there are some scenes that are etched in the audiences' mind for showing something different and interesting.

We list down a few memorable action scenes from our Hindi films.

Ajay Devgan in Phool Aur Kaante

The first ever scene of Ajay Devgan in a Hindi film was an action scene and one that will be remembered amongst the most popular scenes. It wasn't any fight sequence as such but a scene where Ajay Devgan played a wannabe college student who makes an entry in the campus standing atop the pillion seat of two speeding bikes. It was a uniquely conceptualized sequence for that period, choreographed by his father Veeru Devgan who was a renowned action director in films. One can easily say that Ajay made an action-packed entry in Bollywood.

When he started, Ajay Devgan had a very action oriented image, post which he tried his hands at other genres like drama, comedy and romance. More recently he repeated the Phool Aur Kaante act in Golmaal where he made an entry in an exactly similar fashion.

Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2

Hrithik had one of the best sculpted bodies in Bollywood and action comes to him naturally. The opening scene in Dhoom 2 proved it all. Hrithik atop a speeding train was fighting his opponents. And the scene starts with Hrithik rollerblading over the train tracks.

This particular scene was shot in South Africa. Hrithik actually learnt rollerblading from expert professionals for almost a couple of months so that he could pull off the stunt convincingly. And he actually brought in a lot of credibility to the scene.

Aamir Khan in Ghulam

Now Aamir Khan is not really an action hero. But the actor tries his hands at everything and takes special efforts to win the perfectionist stamp in whatever he does. One of the best executed action scenes of Hindi cinema was the one in Ghulam where Aamir Khan takes up the challenge to run before a speeding Mumbai local and escape death at the last second. The scene was very smartly edited and didn't look unreal like the yesteryear action scenes when the frame change would be obvious.

It also went on to win the Best Scene award of the year. In fact one could also say the award category was specially created to honour that scene.

Akshay Kumar

Akki has crossed all limits when it comes to action in Hindi films. He fought WWF wrestler Undertaker (a duplicate one) in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, tussled with a Sumo Wrestler in Mr and Mrs Khiladi, suspended down from a flying helicopter in Sabse Bada Khiladi, handled a hovercraft in International Khiladi and the list is endless. One of the first ones to glamourize martial arts in Hindi films, Akshay Kumar has to his credit the maximum action scenes.

From his repertoire, two scenes grab the maximum attention. One is his Thums Up advertisement stunt, not the present but the earlier one, where he jumps and bumps into almost everything to get hold of a bottle of Thums Up. The second scene was from Om Shanti Om where in the Filmfare Awards nomination sequence he is shown fighting the baddies in the most filmi fashion. Incidentally both these stunts have been blatantly ripped-off from foreign film. But Akki doing it makes all the difference.

Shah Rukh Khan in Don

Shah Rukh again, isn't an action hero but who has mastered the art of romancing. But the one scene where he excelled in adventure was in Don. The scene where Shah Rukh jumps from the plane from a thousand feet height is breathtaking and shot in the most authentic way. Hollywood professionals were used to shot this particular scene and ironically the external scene was completely shot in the confinements of a studio in front of curtains.

Farhan Akhtar deserves special marks for executing this scene successfully.

Anil Kapoor in Nayak

The Matrix stylized scenes made an entry into India not through Hindi films but Tamil cinema. Shankar introduced the specials in his Tamil film Mudalvan which was later reproduced in the same fashion in Hindi film, Nayak.

Anil Kapoor did a Keanu Reeves, fighting off a hundred henchmen in freezed frames and mid-air motion. Thankfully the muck in which Anil was drenched saved us from seeing the actor in his underwear.

The scene was shot with 33 cameras.

Kamal Hassan in Thevar Magan

Unlike Rajnikanth's larger-than-life stunts, Kamal Hassan was more realistic in his action approach.

Again an actor with perfectionist label, Kamal Hassan did a lathi-fight with a group of villagers in Thevar Magan which was India's official entry to Oscar awards.

Kamal Hassan learnt the rural action art and performed it to perfection in the film. A decade later Anil Kapoor reproduced the same act when the film was remade in Hindi as Virasat.
