I know that a lot of people got stranded and so had to be rescued from
their homes in New Orleans. However, I have read of people who left town
in cars and did not take their animal along. They did not even put their
pets in a shelter or a safe place. They left food for the pet that would last
for a few days. People have adopted these pets and are thus responsible
for their lives. Domesticated animals have no way to fend for themselves,
and so should not be abandoned like this. I know that human lives take
precedence over that of animals in such crisis ( I dont really agree with
that, but that is the norm in most societies) but still it was pretty callous
of people who had the opportunity to drive out to leave their pets behind.
I have adopted a dog and I know that there was NO way that I was going
to leave my dog behind. I do not blame the people who had no where to
go or those who had to be rescued . Please share your views.
I also have a request, if any of you in the US is planning on adopting a pet
in the near future please contact the ASPCA. They have a lot of animals in
their shelters who need homes ASAP due to hurricane Katrina and I am
sure that the ASPCA will try and deliver the animal to you. Please try and
help as some of these animals may have to be euthenized due to lack of
funds.
