Cambridge students 'work as prostitutes'

By Ben Farmer
Last Updated: 3:09am BST 12/10/2007

Students at Cambridge University are working as prostitutes, strippers and escorts to earn extra money, it has been claimed.

Cambridge ranks among the world's most prestigious universities

Some female students are working as call girls and lapdancers, while several hundred students or former students are said to be signed up to a single escort agency.

One student is reported to have been a 50-an-hour prostitute in the city who slept with between 40 and 50 men in a two month period during her first year at the prestigous university.

She told a university newspaper she had met other students doing the same.

The unnamed student, who has since given up the work, said she started out of "curiosity" and because another job was not paying enough. She said: "I met other students who did it too. Once you've done it, it is tempting. If you need quick easy money, it's there."

She added: "Clients did like the fact that I was a Cambridge student and so did the agency.

"They liked having a classier girl there – it was good for business."

She added: "In the end I left of my own accord. I just didn't fancy doing it anymore. It did affect my studies, but it was good while it lasted."

Another university student said she had worked as a lapdancer at weekends, travelling to a northern city and earning hundreds of pounds a night. She told the Varsity newspaper: "I started just after I split up with my boyfriend. I wanted to do something that would piss him off."

Though describing the work as "degrading", she said she sometimes earned up to 300 per night.

She added: "The only reason I dance now is for the money, it is such easy cash in hand. I have a boyfriend, who would like me to stop, but I'm not going to stack shelves in Morrison's for 5.50 an hour, when I could do this."

An online website specialising in escort services from Oxbridge and 'Ivy League' students claims to have nearly 350 current or former students from the university on its books.

However, despite some charging hundreds of pounds, the site insists it offers strictly a dinnerdate service and all those registered must agree not to solicit for sex.

Last night, none of the local escort agencies around Cambridge contacted by the Daily Telegraph said they had students working for them.

One escort agency manager said: "We don't know what these people do during the day though and we don't ask. I can imagine students may want to earn money or pay off debts like anyone else."

Dr Rob Wallach, Secretary of the Senior Tutors' Committee, said: "There should be no reason that students should find themselves in such severe financial difficulty that they would have to resort to prostitution.

"However the University and Colleges are aware that students can find themselves in financial difficulty and give support where they can.

"We have no way of knowing whether the claim made in the Varsity article is in fact true. We are most concerned by the report and College Senior Tutors would do everything they could to give support to students well before any found themselves in such a situation."

Gemma Tumelty, the president of the National Union of Students, said "we have not got any evidence at all to suggest that stripping, prostitution, or escort work is in any way widespread among students. They are far more likely to work in bars or the Students Union."

Dear Friends!

Almost all of us read the stories of great people who struggled a lot to do their basic education....

we heard that Abraham Lincoln read under a street light ....

we heard that Thomas Alva Edision worked in some oldbook shop to read..

several other storeis ..from our parents..grandparents..they used to walk several miles to goto their schools....

....these stories are inspirational..

but the incidents similar to the cambridge......really ....🤢🤢🤢....

Are these type of girls defending their mean acts in the name of education?

or

Is it not a big issue.....

should we say...END IS MAIN BUT NOT THE MEANS.....😉😉😉

What is the purpose of education????Is it necessary to study in this manner....???

Should the university authorities be blamed for higher fees??? Is this trend improving in all the universities???

I don't know I'm worried 😆😆😆.....wonder what male students are doing to pay these fees???😆

Cheers,

Mythili Kiran

But some of them want to earn easy money through these means. Nothing can justify their actions. Infact I am sure all of them do it to sustain their high-flying lifestyle and not that they are unable to pay rent or university fees.

or

Is it not a big issue.....It is something to worry about but it is not as bad as the article is making it out to be. Only a few students indulge in such things.

should we say...END IS MAIN BUT NOT THE MEANS.....😉😉😉

What is the purpose of education????Is it necessary to study in this manner....??? NO, NO, NO!

Should the university authorities be blamed for higher fees??? Is this trend improving in all the universities??? You can't blame Universities for high fees, they need money to function. Unless they get help from outside sources, they'll have to keep fees high enough to sustain themselves.

I don't know I'm worried 😆😆😆.....wonder what male students are doing to pay these fees???😆 No Idea...lekin kuchh bhi ho sakta hai...😆

Wow beauty and brains. That is a sweet and rare combination I'd say. No wonder they get paid so well.

Firstly and foremost. I would question the statistics. How many total female students are there in Cambridge? How many are just escorts and how many are prostitutes? Even reputed UK papers are notorious for yellow press, exaggerating claims that will taint a reputable establishment. Twenty out of a hundred maybe a big number, but twenty out of thousand is a smaller percentage. Secondly we also have to factor in people who may fake Cambridge affiliation because of its high demand. We have to take things in full perspective.

Even then honestly, such a source of income to me is degrading and I cannot imagine why anyone would do it for any reason let alone education. However, who am I to judge other people and their choices.

From what I have gained from interacting with Europeans online is that the European sense of ethics tends to be different even from the Americans. While they do not encourage prostitution, there is a growing number who feel that stripping, lap dancing, nude modeling is an equitable source of income. Education costs are high and sometimes even a degree cannot land jobs in saturated markets. Students steep themselves in loans and debt. Some slog it off juggling three to four jobs to earn an honest living, while a whole generation of youth does not want to feel bogged down by the system. They would rather make fast money than lose out on social life and enjoyment for their education. Their logic is that if education is to make our lives better, then it is counterproductive when education makes their life difficult. So I am not surprised when students would resort to such income. I am sure the men who want that easy money are also willingly engaging in such activities. There is no lack of demand for male services.

No I do not condone their choice of profession, nor will I consider it right or acceptable. However, I see where such people come from and I don't care to pass judgments on them. Now if someone cheated to get better grades or cheated me out of a scholarship thats something I would fume about.

I am ok if they did it because they were nymphomanaics... but justifying to pay fees is a crap which is undigestible... I think they could have selected the professors or the dean, principal atleast that would promise them a scholarship....

What next housewives sleeping with the landlord since they cant pay rent...... 😆

I heard in one of the scandinavian countries, think its norway.. i think they have legalized prostitution for house-wives to the point that these women are made to pay taxes on their earnings...

To answer your questions

Are these type of girls defending their mean acts in the name of education? No

or

Is it not a big issue.....No

should we say...END IS MAIN BUT NOT THE MEANS..... The world is moving that way so you wont be way off the mark...

What is the purpose of education????Is it necessary to study in this manner....??? No.. but education is a highly marketeble commodity......

Should the university authorities be blamed for higher fees??? Is this trend improving in all the universities??? No how can they britain is a poor nation where will they get the money from?

I don't know I'm worried .....wonder what male students are doing to pay these fees??? I thought there is a chippendales in London isnt there.. but guys will have tough time making up the brawn... 😆

Are these type of girls defending their mean acts in the name of education? There is a segment of population that will engage in world's oldest profession for anything - money, fun, family member needing medical operation etc.. add education to that list now. The fact that they are in university is incidental. These girls want to be educated prostitites..😕

I have also heard IVF clinics and sperm banks recruit college students for egg/sperm donation or surrogate pregnancy.

or

Is it not a big issue..... Not for them obviously

should we say...END IS MAIN BUT NOT THE MEANS.....😉😉😉 .. what good is education to them? They have found a way to make big money in shortest time possible.

What is the purpose of education????Is it necessary to study in this manner....??? Nope. Education beyond high school for an average person is over kill. I see so many graduates from India working as clerks or secretaries.

Should the university authorities be blamed for higher fees??? Is this trend improving in all the universities??? There is scholarship for the deserving candidates who cannot afford to pay for education.

I don't know I'm worried 😆😆😆.....wonder what male students are doing to pay these fees???😆 Oldest profession does not discriminate on gender.😆

perhaps there are women(and men( in this world who do not share your impotance of "sexual virtue", for them it might just be another commodity

I dont know why we have this block in our minds, what we find to be a great virtue has to be a virtue for others too?

Over and over research has stated strippers/escorts/exotic dancers put food on their table by whatever means they adopt. they work hard for that money and do it honestly

I would not question their acts when I have people on the other side who have respectable jobs, slack on their jobs and sell their honesty for a extra buck and in this category, I have people who have IAS, IIT degree's 😉
