The good and the evil Arjun Punj is under the spotlight for his role as Dr. Aman in the telly serial "Sanjeevani" |
WHAT BOLLYWOOD could not do for Arjun Punj, television did. After a disastrous start to his career in
Tere Liye, the film in which he played the lead role, Arjun Punj is more than making amends playing Dr. Aman in
Sanjeevani. This boy-next-door image of his has gained him lots of popularity, despite the negative side to the character of Dr. Aman.
Tere Liye was a film by Zee Telefilms and featured all young, upcoming artistes like Arjun Punj, Hiten Paintal, Shilpa Saklani and Sonali Khare. When
Tere Liye released, Arjun said, "I am happy with my debut role because I got to do everything in the film — songs, love scenes and emotional scenes . It was for the first time that I faced the camera for
Tere Liye. Honestly, I was a little nervous but I decided to go for an audition (when my model coordinator told me about the role). And when the film was released, my role was really appreciated." Though Arjun's mother wanted him to be a newsreader, Arjun says that he wanted to be the next Shah Rukh Khan and star on the big screen rather than the idiot box. He confesses that he got a lot of encouragement from his father who happens to be a movie freak. "I did not learn acting at all," says Arjun, who has grown up watching Aamir Khan in
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Shah Rukh Khan in
Deewana, which for him are no less than text books in acting. "I want to concentrate more on my style than on building my body," says Punj. However, after his graduation from Delhi he acted in some plays before he decided to shift to the film capital of India, Mumbai. For four long years he went for various auditions, but did not give up. And finally
Tere Liye happened. After
Tere Liye sank at the box-office, Arjun did a few ads, appeared in a couple of music videos and tried his luck down south doing two Telugu films Though he made some good money, he pined to come back to Bollywood. After this came a big surprise for Arjun. He was selected for
Sanjeevani, which has changed his life completely. The role of Dr. Aman, who was shaping up as Mr. Perfect, is now turning evil and viewers are somewhat appalled at the change in his personality. "It's a very challenging role as I have to show two sides of a human being — good and evil," says the actor who feels his character has provided a shot-in-the-arm to the serial. Arjun says he is now focused on doing good work on television but would love to go back to the silver screen — the place he has always wanted to be in. He wants to work with all the big banners like his screen idols Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan. It's no doubt a long way to go but this young man is confident of reaching there. His favourite role would be that of Aamir Khan in
Sarfarosh.
According to Arjun, "Sanjeevani has been like a school for me. I am working with a lovely team. There is so much to learn. I am indeed fortunate to get this role." Like everyone involved in the Hindi film industry, there is a lot of gossip surrounding this star. Earlier, he was linked to Shilpa Saklani (Ganga of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) and is now romantically paired with Juhi, his co-star in Sanjeevani. Well, gossip is an integral part of this industry and has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
